Title: Still can't get 1st gear
Post by: mf44 on 22 October 2009, 17:29
Hi I've been unable to get 1st gear so I've renewed all the bushes & put new connecting rods on as per the linkage repair guide in the maintenance section. I still can't get 1st though, and after taking the gaitor off I can see why - the lever wont push far enough to the left because the reverse lock out plastic barrier thingy is stopping it. I know it's there to stop you accidentally engaiging reverse but sometimes if you put it in reverse you get 1st - not good at traffic lghts! It's almost as if the whole set up needs moving to the right, as on my other mk2 the lever is further across to the right when in the nuetral resting position. Not sure what to do next? help!

undo the pinch bolt on the rod and twist the rod a little bit, do the bolt up and give it a try.
took me a couple of attempts to get it right when i changed the bushes. dont go too far the other way or you wont be able to get 5th

grab the gearstick and lift it upwards, if there is movement the housing under the car needs to be replaced. if worn this makes lining it up properly a bit of a mission.
if you don't have the alignment tool what i do is loosen the pinch bolt, then put it in 3rd. wiggle the stick left & right till its centred, then try 1st, reverse & 5th. if all is well do up the pinch bolt, if not put it in 3rd again and tweak it in the required direction.
