ive got a stock gti 1998 r reg and ive just had my mk 3 jamex spring posted to my house , ive marked the stut at the bottom so it doesnt mess up the camber and got to undo the top nut with the allen hole in the middle and it was that tight i broke my 1/4 drive extension , how tight are these ive had to re build it for now :undecided:
-
Can really be tight, might be best to try an impact wrench.
-
what wayne said. if you havent got one, nip to a local garage, get them to undo it and nip it back up
as for marking the strut. it wont work, if your lowering it, I know i have tried many a time  get it track n cambered up after.
i use www.alignmycar.co.uk
-
I broke the top of my original strut! The bit where the hex bit goes in!
So yea only way I got mine undone was with an air gun.
-
Problem i had with this is that an impact gun wont get them off if they are F'in tight without spinning the shock.
They only need to be nipped, but mine were very tight.
Had to grip the top cup with some big grips and huge leverage and then impact gun them out.

i might not bother , im selling soon anyway , ive still got loads of bits to sell with her , what do you reckon id get for a 96 r reg mystik blue 3 dr gti 8v with 113k on it , full stainless de-cat backwards , octavia 16" alloys , no rips on recaro interior , 12 months test , no rust.
ive got a full set of james lowering springs and 2 eibach rear lowering springs all 30mm drop , ive got a stainless twin tail pipe scorpion back box
-
200 quid less than before we knew we'd have to cut the shocks to change the springs
-
just seems a lot of hassle to me , im fed up with cars

I found that mulgrips are the most useful tool with my engine conversion.
The amount of bolts that snap or round off or dont undo and need to be pulled out wiht mulgrips is crazy!!
You will win the battle :)
