Do I smell Stage 2?
There is a high possibilty of that happening............
Going to get everything checked out first to see if I am missing any ponies. All being well it will be Stage 2

what figures should you be pushing out after a stage 2?

Adam's made 180bhp and 350lbs ft torque BUT it added an extra 15bhp and 30lbs ft torque across the whole rev range therefore giving greater average power
-
JKM dyno = 174.9bhp 332lbft

Our rolling road 171.9bhp 333lbft
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh252/Rtechremaps/adamtdi-spec1.jpg?t=1256040081)
Spec2 still with running issues at peak boost 179.6bhp 338lbft
The main gain was another 15bhp/15lbft across the whole band. Not much peak power but the car was tranformed due to the smooth curve and greater avg BHP.
Nick
With an extra 15bhp and

Does that mean more smog?

Does that mean more smog?
dunno :undecided: hope so!!!
Though I 'think' because the boost levels are upped then it helps burn the fuel so less smoke.
Nick can confirm that though :nerd:
-
Iv got more smog! I love the smoke.
Them graphs depress me now. Need to get that sorted.
-
 = smog

look at the BHP figure as well though and see how its maintained right to the end; in effect its almost have of the rev range
End of the day you hate diesels FACT and you're looking at the wrong graph
When you getting your MK4 by the way so we can laugh at your lack of power

good sh!t just had a chat with the r tech people its around 150 quid for tunign ti and rr it think am quite limited now to get more gains coz ill have the milltek on and i have the r tech map unless i spend big bucks i think it will just stay around 200 bhy mark which is quality.. the only thing is am gettign used to the dam map now and the buzz is wearign off plus i dotn really boost it past 3000 revs on the motorway or overtaking coz i think am ragging it by the sound of the high revs????! am i?

depending on how your map is setup then most useful power will be done by about 3500rpm although the 150 does maintain the power for longer due to the bigger turbo. Its always good to give it a thrashing now and again to help clean out the crud
Steve's peaks at 28PSI and then holds 23PSI to the redline!!

Let us know how you get on Rhyso- I too am starting to lose the buzz of the re-map, could go for a stage2 soon to re-ignite the 'buzz'. How much are they charging you??

I've not lost the buzz really - just curious to see what can be done and if i'm missing BHP from my run at JKM. 17bhp varience between rollers sounds like quite a lot to me :undecided: Although my torque figure was spot on
-

All your precious torque is gone by 3400 rpm though and your left with about 170 bhp?
Not going to get a mk4. Just got a cheap place to rent till i buy my house meaning i save a further £500 a month, also my salary is going up so going to try and be car-less and put it towards a BMW 335i and a remap.
-
so how come people with Hybrid turbos are making 220-240 bhp and 350-370 ft/lb but your making 350 ft.lb on a standard turbo :undecided: what psi is it peaking at? surly it cant be good for the turbo or your intercooler pipe :lipsrsealed:
-
Do you not need to upgrade anything to go for a stage 2? FMIC etc?
-
According to Nick the FMIC isn't really needed on the TDI for stage 2.
-
But vw thought it was needed on a TDI 150 :undecided:
its more like stage 1.5, as stage 2's a hybrid turbo etc

Good point, I'm just quoting what Rhys said to me earlier via PM.

will find out on the 31st
and Bob - i've done everything but turbo and FMIC

With the TDIs its all about using the fuel to higher the cylinder filling / volumetric efficiency of the engine, more fuel / smoke more power then then turbo is only there to clean the burn. You can turn the boost up on a petrol turbo car and make good power gains without having to add fuel, but with a TDI if you just turn up the boost there wont me much of a gain until the extra fuel is added.
Adams is set to 1.7bar in the mapping with a 5% overboost deviation which combined with a nice rich pre boost fuel mix has given Adam 338lbft. (there is still more room to go on the fuel to gain more power but no more room to go with the boost) we can add more fuel to get more power but it would be thick back stuff..
Nick

FMIC is not really needed for stage 2. But FMIC is on the cards within the next few months.
Steve- I think they said its peaking at 27? I need to fit a boost gauge.

But I want thick black smoke. Maybe develop a switch for MOT times.

Ill have a word on the weekend

But vw thought it was needed on a TDI 150 :undecided:
yeah but how hot does it get in wales.. really
australian/american/south african markets had to be catered for (as well as their crap fuel burning badly and heating things up)
-
hotter than it does up north
-
Not normally where i am going next month its always cold windy and normally wet there
-
Cant wait too see how you get on
Big turbo on the cards a reckon
-
Going back down there myself the day before you,it'll be interesting to see how much the derv can be pushed on std turbo.
-
I think I'd rather fit some extra kit to comfortably push it, than to stretch what you have to within an inch of it's life. The pipes burst off enough as it is!
-

I don't want to push it too far as its quite a long walk home otherwise
Adam's 130 has made 180bhp and 350lbs ft
I'd settle for 190bhp and 330lbs ft lol
Roll on the 31st!!

found that for him but will it just die again...?
-
it should be nowhere near failing point at those kind of pressures, a rubber hose should burst first! i never got to see it, Rhys had gone by the time i got back.. but i reckon some sort of impact damage or manufacturing fault, especially if it's gone near a join

It's times like this where I bless my credit card!

does anyone know if he atleast managed to get his boost gauge fitted with the threaded nipple i pulled from my magic box of bits?
-
he hasnt fitted it, but has all the parts now
he'll be back online when ever his internet connection come back on

I'll post the pic of his intercooler up in a mo, it's a bit messy :undecided:

I was looking forward to getting the dirty derv to spec2, then we find the oil on the IC/
Its a commom place for the oem to fail, where the plastic meets the metal it starts to leak.
Another vist due to R-Tech thread comming soon???
Nick

I might actually be able to pop along this time

Does he come all the way from Wales?
Gutted, never gonna be faster then Adam!
Oh, and page 2, tyre pressures!
-
he already knows about, only down the road as well
Defiantly worth a punt - he said he is going to get a second hand one as a new one is 200 pounds

Apparently 115 intercooler is the same as the 130s?
Good news if so, gives a few more options

right as Steve says my internet has been down due to a gas explosion in my village Friday night - basically the beginning of a really sh!te weekend
Thanks everyone for the links
To clarify a few things:
1) 115 is different I believe due to the size of the map sensor
2) Forge FMIC - i'm saying nothing about my view on Forge products :lipsrsealed: and i don't have a week to potch about getting an Allard one to fit. Also to get a 150 TDI FMIC to fit requires the radiator to be fitted so thats a no-go too
3) 2nd hand will do me fine until I give it some more thought
4) With a dodgy intercooler she still pumps out 177bhp and 311lbs ft torque - good enough to embarass a few people on the way home
Thanks for all the links and support lads
EDIT - picking up one later this week and going to get it tested before putting it on the car. Will also buy that one on Ebay and get that tested lol
Fingers crossed
-
New one from VW according to my ETKA is around £250 - not as bad as i first thought lol
-
A guy on ukmkivs fitted a 130 intercooler to his 115 (or vice versa) and just changed the MAP sensors over
anyways glad to hear you're getting it sorted ok mate, sorry I haven't been texting back but I've run out until the 6th lol
-
Hope gets sorted soon Rhys

ah no worries Wes  Got working internet at home again now so managed to put in a bid for that intercooler local to me
I could end up with 3 useless intercoolers come the weekend mind
Picking up one tomorrow night now!! Hopefully have it tested by the weekend..........
-
right
Picking up an intercooler off a mate tomorrow night - need to have it tested as it was taken off his Bora about 18 months ago by VW
Just won the one on Ebay which is down the road from me for under £30 so will make arrangements to pick that up at the weekend
Bring back the power!!

good work rhys :afro: hopefully you should be happy now and the derv should be okay for stage 2

Not having much luck, all this spending out on other bitsyou will never have the money for a stage 2, better start selling your body to bring in more funds!

Can you not run a large FMIC infront of the radiator, or am I being completely stupid?
-
Can you not run a large FMIC infront of the radiator, or am I being completely stupid?
You can there are 2 options for us dervs. They are around 600-700.
One is Forge and Im sure Rhys will tell you the problems he has had with his Forge product.
And the other is Allard, and that is OVERKILL!
-

Rhyso if you get the Pipercross VIS filter you will be pushing about 195bhp and 500ft/lb torque

quick update
picked up one of the intercoolers last week, cleaned it all out on Friday (fair amount of oil and rubbish in there!) and left it standing full of water over the weekend as at the time I couldn't find any suitable pipe to cap the ends and pressure test it......
Came back into work this morning to find that the intercooler still had all the water in it!
Found some suitable pipe this morning so hoping to pressure test it this afternoon
All being well I'll be fitting it tomorrow..............although its currently sat on a radiator drying out
-
good stuff rhys if its held water over the weekend then its a good sign although have to see when its pressure tested hopefully should be fine and you can get it fitted job done  back over to r-tech  :afro:

although it held water it was actually leaking around where the hoses go in so until it was pressure tested we wouldn't have known
Best pick up that one from Ebay........

at the risk of sounding even more daft, can't you weld up where the leaks are on the intercooler?
-

not 100% sure on that - where its leaking is plastic and I'm not sure if a plastic weld would hold up :undecided:
-
ah, what about getting the plastic replaced with some metal? probably not feasable mind just thinking out loud so to speak
-

not unless it can be moulded to the shape of the hose that its got to hold onto
Might see if i can get one repaired to keep as a spare lol
-
is yours split in the same place as the one you just bought? might be worth seeing if you can make one decent cooler out of the two broken ones you have????

as i've already posted - MONEY!!!
I'm not spending any more money on engine upgrades; once this is sorted I'll be sorting out the handling with all new top mounts and shocks and then just try and enjoy the car whilst saving for its eventual replacement
-
No worries.
-
Had a look at mine, all is good.
got the one from eBay yet?

won't be this side of crimbo unfortunately as i've got something on pretty much every weekend between now and then :undecided:
also I don't want to be pushing things too soon until I'm confident this intercooler is going to hold up and I want to see if I can get one of the others repaired to keep as a spare
nobody guessed what the picture is either
-
is it what you used to blank of the ends of the intercooler :undecided:
-
is it what you used to blank of the ends of the intercooler :undecided:
nope  used some big coolant pipe and a couple of Volvo industrial fuel filters to block off the ends
front bumper and headlight is off ready for stage 2 at lunchtime
-
intercooler is out..............
MAP sensor isn't  f**king screws have rounded off so I now have to drill them out
-
Not having much luck mate. :(
-
Dam
-
i'm heading home :lipsrsealed:
-
With stage 2 or with old intercooler  :lipsrsealed:
-
With stage 2 or with old intercooler  :lipsrsealed:
With the new intercooler
Didn't hammer it on the way home for a few reasons
1) absolutely hammering down and it spins up easily enough in the dery
2) you never 100% sure you've replaced the clips properly
3) following on from 2 - don't really want to have to re-attach something in the dark
And what a potchy job  As I mentioned the screws for the MAP sensor rounded off and the drills we had in work are useless cos a) they're crap and b) it appears the screws used are HARDENED  So out came the angle grinder
Then re-attaching the Forge pancake pipe was fun as although its a great idea to put a bracket next to the connection they didn't exactly leave enough space to get a spanner onto the nut..............
So first impressions - urm none really :undecided: I guess it 'feels' as if its sustaining the boost harder and longer :undecided:
I'll give it a good go on the way to work tomorrow - not bothered about being late for work   Might also plug in my boost gauge for the return trip home too
-
hope its ok, did you get the stage 2 map?
-
hope its ok, did you get the stage 2 map?
no because of the intercooler.........
Gave it some stick this morning
Does feel better - pulls that little bit harder and seems to sustain it too. Also produces less smoke which I think is due to a sparkly clean intercooler - the amount of oil in my old one was
-
the the beast is back then?
-
