Ignition timing too far advanced.
Does it pink?
Done my timing using the guide on here and has been starting fine ever since

Does the engine turnover when warm or will it just not turn?

Did you change the bell housing bush when you replaced the starter?

if its cranking over and wont fire and only when hot could be the coolant temp sensor. i know modern vag's are bad for it i change them every other day

As a free test you could loosen the bolt on the dizzy and back it off the tiniest bit and see if it starts.
Had to do mine by ear after i done my headgasket and i knew when i had advanced it to much cos the b stard wouldn start (like a dead battery)
Used a mates timing light job done.
Timing needs to be set at 2500 rpm with blue senser unplugged

when warm it seems as if the battery hasnt enough power to turn it over, then all of a sudden it fires, first thing in the morning half a turn and it fires.

Hi
Try a new ignition switch.

before you do that, run a chunky wire direct from the battery +ve to the red/black wire terminal on the starter. if it turns over strong then you know its ign switch wiring or switch itself at fault.
if it does the same thing as before its the starter, battery cables or the battery
