Hi guys, not long had my 1.8 20vt Golf.. One thing I've noticed is it takes a while to hit 90 degrees. I can do 15 mins of driving for 5 miles or so, town driving so low speeds (you'd think it'd maybe warm up fairly quickly stop starting a bit) and it only just hits 90 degrees by then...
But in the last couple of days, it warms up as usual, a little slower perhaps.. I know the outside temperature is a bit lower now but I've noticed the temp gauge fluctuating between 80 and 90 degrees a lot, even when idling parked up sometimes...
Any clues? Be interested to generally know how long your cars take to warm up though with this engine (mines an AGU lump).
Ta :)

doesnt sound right, might be some sensors that need replacing
-
mine doesnt move at all
lol sensor been replaced as well
-
when you're doing 70mph does it drop off the 90 mark?
My money is on a new thermostat. There is a guide i wrote in the maintenance section.

My money is on a new thermostat.....
Ditto that, exact symptoms I had. Also a good excuse to ditch the old coolant and perhaps (if you are feeling keen) a couple of sensors with the coolant drained?
-
Does sound thermostat related, gonna keep my eye on it.
Was due a cambelt and waterpump change in a couple of weeks so was planning on dumping, flushing and replacing coolant anyway.
More money to spend lol :)

+1
Got my temp sender changed the other week and the car is a lot smoother now and the MPG has gone up!!
-
i'm having the same(ish) symptoms and mine drops off to 80 when going down a hill  good chance to change the coolant before winter so looks like a job for sunday going to order a thermostat+seal and 3 litres of G12 may replace the coolant temp sensor to while i'm at it
-
my sensor been change, just my needle dont work lol wat could it be?
-
im probably gunna change my thermostat too, follow the guide i got of this forum, looks easy enough.
-
mine is doing the same , go down a hill or on bypass and temp drops right down ! just got a stat and temp sensor about £44 trade from dealer for the pair.

Had loads of stuff changed the last two days, coolant flush and thermostat (along with cambelt/tensioners/waterpump/aux belt/fuel filter) was done.
Warmed up within a few miles tonight on way home from garage... old thermostat had 2 holes drilled in it? Weird? Why would someone do that? Haha..
Hopefully I'll have no trouble after all this work has been done and my mpg will go up, did get nice and toasty real quickly (compared to how it was) which will be a bonus for winter mornings :)

:afro: makes a definate improvement in changing the stat even more so at this time of year glad i sorted mine nice and warm within two miles
-
Got my thermostat ready to fit at the weekend. I have had to buy a new battery too... Seems my car has taken to this winter quite hard! Only doing 200 miles a month doesn' help I suppose!
-
Warmed up a beaut this morning @ 2 degrees outside.. within 3 miles it was nudging 90, seems weird lol :)
-
thermaltw*t and antifreeze done tonight and thought i'd drop oil and filter and fit a set of front pads whilst i was at it ,now all i need to do is get 2 tyres fitted replace broken dipstick tube and make the bl**dy thing faster

nice to see another minty colour thought mine was the loner on here.
mine must be fooked to! mine never gets to 90 only when in stand still traffic when cruising along its always between 80 mark and the first free lines. on average mpg it never goes over 25 but i do sometimes have a heavy foot  it warms up nice after 5 mins say about a mile driving from cold. think mines due for a change?

Yes

Worth doing for the cost really. Could be coolant temp sensor too?
I need take some proper pics of mine, me cam was f00ked and so it looks more green than it is in the pics haha.
-
i got the same colour but 5 door with recaro int, nice car pref it over the mk2+3 but def not over the mk1 ;) whats the total cost for the sensors for the mk4 and which ones did u change just the temp sensor?
-
I didn't change owt but the thermostat on mine but had a load of work done for 300 quid and that was in the price so dunno what it was individually. Aye mines got the recaro interior, tints, jamex suspension kit which is better than expected, polybushed rear & dog bone, remapped, not bad for 2200 quid :) Providing it dunna break lol
-
ye looks nice whats the mileage? i think il change the thermtwit and the temp sender have done this with ever golf iv had as they had never been changed and when the cold weather sets in its starts showing. mines done 70k miles i changed rear beam bushes to vrs and fitted jom sus forge relocation kit and splitter valve and fittd nice pioneer double din stereo bought car for 1500 and rest of stuff cost me around 600 mark. :undecided:
-
Thats well cheap for a 1.8t nevermind your low milage! :)
Mines on 131k now lol
-
Thermostat is approx £30 and the temp sender is approx £20 from the dealers
Dont' forget to pick up some fresh G12++ coolant whilst you're there :afro:
-
Reckon mine needs doing too. The temp gauge has two settings - 0 and 90. It's like it's a bit sleepy - I'll drive for 100 miles and then suddenly it'll realise it needs to do something and shoot up to 90 and not move after that, even if i'm stuck in traffic for a while when I'd expect it to creep up towards the red. Very silly.
-
Well mine never goes above 90. Seems common on the Golfs, bang on 90 no matter what when up to temp unless somethings wrong...
Mine warms up a beaut now, pleased I've had all the work done before winter truely sets in :)
