I'm currently on the variable service regime and do about 20k (mostly m'way) per annum. Obviously the variable is the way to go here. However when I get REVO in the new year will it be better to switch to time and distance and it get more frequent oil changes which may help against potential more stress that the engine will undergo from mapping.
PS I have searched and can find loads of debates on servicing and oil types nut none on best type to go with mapping.

Given your putting your car under more load (your bound to use your new found power from time to time !) I'd revert to time and distance, making sure you dont scrimp on the quality of oil used. The VW recommended oil is pretty good - Ask Teutonic Tamer.

To be honest there is no debate about it. All GTI's should be on time and distance, remap or not.

I dont disagree, it's in the car's interest however many of them came as long life as did mine.

i've gone from LL to TD to Bi-Annual oil changes now (every 5k miles or there abouts)

On a slightly related topic, following a remap would anyone recommend how often would you would change the air filter and the plugs?

I wouldn't change them any differently. The plugs will just need an extra check, but they should still do the miles. :cool:

For the OP - time and distance should have always been standard on the GTI/ED30. and using long life oil. ASK T_T. After being remapped, I'd recommend dropping the oil every 5k too. :smiley:

We all agree on the best practice approach to servicing these vehicles but 'should' cannot surely mean all were set to T&D.
My car and others I looked at were set to Long life servicing and were not changed according to the dealers I spoke to.
Are they all telling pork pies or can VW not really tell ?
My car had 6000 miles on it when purchased at 7months old.
Mysteriously 1 month after ownership my car decides to tell me it needs a service which the dealer tried to avoid paying for
The long and short of it was I got the service for free after kicking up a fuss but VW H/Office were adamant my vehicle had been set to Long Life servicing from the factory.

Longlife servicing is a bit of a con IMO as cars very rarely reach their given mileage before a service is due
Don't forget its all based on your driving style - short journeys through town, etc will mean you will do less miles between services than those who cruise up and down the motorway all day. If the previous owner did lots of short journey's in heavy traffic then its no wonder the service light came on early

Agreed,driving conditions is the major factor, but therein lies the flaw in the notion of VWs long life servicing claim.
My car didn't even make to 8 months before it needed a service which is poor even for T&D never mind long life.

Best summed up by T_T who basically said if it's on LL and you rag it about then it'll ask for a service in almost T&D intervals.
The main point being LL is expensive and you are paying what is a 24-month service price every 12 months (or less).
Why not move to T&D, because yes you will have the same intervals, but inspection services (and the associated costs!) will only come round every two years! :nerd:
LL is fine for motorway wh0re soot-slingers, not GTi's. Period. :afro:

Thanks for the replies guys, I kinda guessed that would be the responce (and the option I would feel most comfortable with). I also had it confirmed from a conversation with JKM today.

My recommendation for "modified" cars and/or "enthusiastic" driving
Now, to the point of modifications, particularly engine based mods. My advice is simple. Do NOT use the LongLife servicing regime, and only use the conventional fixed interval "Time and Distance" servicing regimes. However, please DO continue to use the higher quality LongLife oil, and not the lesser quality Time and Distance oils. If your engine or car is highly modified, or if you are a particularly 'enthusiastic' driver - then I would very strongly recommend you not only use the T&D regime with LongLife oils, but also consider a further interim oil & filter change every 6 months or 5k miles.

Hi Rob,
"Should have" doesn't mean that they were set to T&D servicing. Mine was originally set to long life at the factory, but altered by my dealer at my request (as well as keeping the long life oil).
If you drive like miss daisy, then long life is fine. Drive the car like it should be driven and you should be on T&D servicing. :cool:
When the car is modified with a higher bhp, then a shortened T&D regime should be utilised for oil, filter, DSG service etc.
