Hi there
I just recently bought a Golf GTi 1.8T V reg 2000, and wondered if anyone knew if boot spoilers come as standard on these models or if they a modification. Im only asking for insurance purposes.
-
Dont think they came as standard, I have had 3 Golf GTi's now & non of them had a spoiler fitted
-
Thanks Chris, ive looked at pics of similar models on autotrader, etc, and some have the same spoiler as i do, and some dont. Confused.com!

if it was fitted with a spoiler from the factory than thats classed as standard fitment.
Only becomes an extra / modification if you retro-fit it AFTER the car has been built
-
How can you tell if it was fitted with it from the factory?
I work for a Toyota dealership & if a customer orders a spoiler on their new car then we actually fit them at our dealership

The way I see it is if you ordered it when you bought the car its classed as standard fitment.
If you buy it 1 day after you've bought the car its a modification
I stand to be corrected though
-
But how would i personally know if it was standard fitted at the factory or added after??
This car has had 4 owners, i bought it off a dealership who dont seem to know either. Do i need to declare this with my insurers or not?
-
apparently my car came standard with a red ani gti rear badge, a milltek exhaust sytem to be fitted later
bbs rcs in a custom gunmetal grey colour and the owner decided to get boro sport fis clocks, remap the caant and do a 312mm upgrade
always blaggable
-
I would just mention to the iunsurance company its got a rear spoiler but also state that its a genuine VW one so you think its factory fitted, Better to be safe than sorry

In the front of your sevice book should be a list of option codes - need to find the one for the spoiler. A VW dealer should be able to tell you what was fitted via the chassis number
Spoiler is not going to make any difference to your premium i would have thought - declare it all the same though and tell them it was factory fitted
-
Thanks guy, ive told the insurers anyway and that i have tinted windows, and that increased my policy amount by £93!!! Not sure if thats because of the tinted windows or both. I spoke to the owner of the dealer i bought the car from just now, and he said all 1.8Turbos are fitted with boot spoilers as standard
-
Can 100% say the 1.8t didnt come with the spoiler as standard
-
I'm hoping to get a rear spoiler soon, won't tell the insurance company about it. The way I see it, if it could have come as an extra, then the car *could* have had it in the first place. If you bought the car and it already had one, you'd not know if it came with it, or if the previous owner had it put on.

Exactly,
-
Thats actually what my boyfriend said, he told me not to declare it because it might be standard, but even if it wasnt thats how i got the car so how was i to know it wasnt standard. but i thot it was a bit risky, because i wouldnt want my policy voided cos of not telling them about something like that.

Well, in fairness, I would tell my insurance company, as the guy I spoke to said that it won't change my policy adding any none performance related parts, and there's no admin fee for doing it  but generally speaking, I wouldn't bother.

The only Mk4 Golf's to have spoliers fitted as standard from the factory were the R32 and the GTi Anniversary.
Any other Golf Mk4 with a spoiler has been added once the car got delivered to the dealership or afterwards by the owner. Even if you wanted one when you bought the car new, the dealer would of fitted it not the factory. The spoiler was not a factory order option.
Part number for the genuine VW Golf Mk4 tailgate spoiler is 1J0 071 640 AK and cost £94 +Vat plus paint and fitting..

or type the codes into this site (http://igorweb.org/equidec/) and it will de-code them for you

You have already proved him wrong on this from looking on Autotrader!!! I fitted mine and I didn't tell my insurance company. I didn't tell them about my mudflaps either!!

Just a wee update for anyone interested, the insurers double checked with the guide book they had about cars and standard features, and it turns out the rear spoiler is classed as a modification, its an optional extra and not factory fitted. Raised my policy by a further £51 and all. :undecided: But at least its been declared and i wont have any comeback on that in the event of me ever having to make a claim.
Thanks for all your help once again. Now then, does anyone know why my car makes a whirring sound everytime i turn the key in the ignition

Im such a girl arent I? I was told not to bother, but id rather not have policy voided for something so trivial, it cost me too much money to take that risk (yes all of £822)

Fule pump priming :nerd:

Yes it would of been fitted and painted by the dealers when it was new...

Hi, does any one know where I can purchase an OEM Golf MK4 roof spoiler?
This item seems to be increasingly difficult to source. I am after one with a notch to receive the aerial when the boot is open. Thanks
