Title: Glovebox Light
Post by: nick_thomas on 18 October 2009, 21:47
I've had the golf a year and only discovered that there is one.

Upon closer inspection it didn't work, the bulb was fine, fiddled it a bit and it sprung into life.

Right, it's on whenever the ignition is on, regardless of whether the glove box is open or not, I add this is the upper glovebox (8v GTI).

My only worry is the bulb getting nice and hot because it's on whenever the engine/ignition is on, there doesn't seem to be a switch anywhere.

This right.

Thanks in advance.

Is it not linked to your interior lights?

It's supposed to be like that. I've had 4 Mk3's and the only one that was different was the VR6 because it had a passenger airbag and lower glovebox

The switch on my 16v is part of the light bulb housing and is worked by the curved arm on the glovebox lid that holds it in the open position.

I would doubt that any others are differant. You will probably find either the spring in the switch has gone or part of the plastic has broken off.

Pop the light out and have a look.

Remove the bulb.

Cheers, I'll check Vag-cat tonight to see if anything has snapped off, but the arm on the door of the box certainly doesn't touch the light assy in any way.

Would anyone be kind enough to take a picture of theirs so I may check?

Regards

Seems a coincidence that all 3 of my base model Mk3's have been like it then? If you pop off one of the blanks next to the heated rear screen switch you can normally see the glovebox light from there, or on my 1.4 Ryder the glovebox handle was non existant so you could see it through there also

more then likely that the light mechanism had broke, and someone had made it so it worked like that.

Both my mk3s 1.4 base model and 2.0l  had the mechanical mechanism when when you open the glovebox it would light up, when you close it the contact will become open and the light goes out. on my 1.4 i broke the mechanism (which is spring driven) and nearly took me 3 weeks to work out how it worked (without the abilty to look at a working one) so i could put the spring back in correctly!

i would suggest the your mechanism isnt quite put together right, so it holds all the plastic together, but it makes permanent contact hence the bulb on all the time. Easy option is get one from scrappy or take bulb out, or see if you can get a pic of what the mechanism should go together like and try to fix it.
