This is a common fault, and there are kits available to fix it. the are just a piece of metal, cut and shaped to fit in the bulkhead, over the weak point.
Have a search on some of the VW sites for it.

I had to do my cab just over a year ago. As Adam says, its a very common failure.............I've fitted the kit to three mk1's myself!

Will I need a welder to put the kit onto the car?

It can be welded in but to be honest when I did mine I used some high strength aircraft sealant from work............worked a treat and overpaintable. If I remember correctly the kit includes some self adhesive pads.

Mine did it just b4 the smash, If the clutch is very heavy or stiff, it might be worrth attending to that as well as thats what usually makes the weak point in the bulkhead go in the frist place. ? ;)

Funny you should say that, I replaced the cable only 6 weeks ago and I thought the clutch was getting stiff over the last few weeks lucky I checked it sat properly.....

Engine coming out anyway and bodywork is started also so I don't think the car will be on the road for a bit....

I live in Yateley. I can get you some sealant if you want to try it that way, however, if the engine is coming out anyway why not get it welded in properly whilst the rest of the bodywork is being done. You can temporarily stick the plate in place so that you can still use the car until it comes off the road ;)

Your only down the road from me, I live boarders Staines going on Laleham. I'm going to weld the kit to the car, but thanks for the offer. I have to replace 2 front winds and rear arch's as they arch's feel off when I took the arch covers off last week. Lucky the rest of the car is solid and no rust on the doors, and interior..... thank God...!!

Do you know any good mobile welders in the area - other than looking in Yellow pages?

I don't know of any, but I know a man that should. He's the local mechanic/MOT inspector and a drinking buddy of mine, handy guy to know ;)

I'll ask him next time I see him :)

Thanks alot Rich.

I tried to mail JV yesterday to provide details to have my car put in the project section as it's about to go through a MAJOR change, but my mail bounced to JV. Who else can I provide the details too? I'm going to start document the changes and provide pictures so others can benefit.

I'll try and start you up a section later on today. I haven't done it before, only for myself, but I can't imagine it will be too difficult for me to work out
