Title: Urgent help with TDI 130 PD, video of problem in post
Post by: asif on 18 October 2009, 17:49
Right I was driving along not putting my foot down or anything and just generally picking up speed from second to third

next thing I know I hear a pop and loose power, I look in my rear view there is a fair bit of smoke not loads but more than enough to notice

the turbo wasn't kicking in after this so drove hoe really slowly using less revs as possible.

When I opened the hood I found this problem, a pipe come away, not sure what it is but can't get it back in.

Please see the video attached and can someone please tell me what's up and how much it will cost to get sorted.

Anyone else had this problem? Is it common?

a intercooler hose a popped off
take the plastic cover off and your see the hose is not pushed in.
there is also a metal u shaped clip which holds the hose in place. see if you can find the metal clip.
the clip needs to be pushed around the metal EGR pipe first then the hose gets pushed in

heres a picture of a blown intercooler pipe on mine
you can see the metal clip

also check the lugs on the pipe for signs of wearing

Cheers for the speedy response, I think the clip has dropped off as I can't find it.

I'll get the garage to put one on as it's going for a check on something else anyway.

Is this common???

looking at the video is there any damage to the housing??

From a certain angle it looks as if you've had the same happen to you as it did to me in that you've shattered the EGR housing and you'll need a new one

That will be £190 by the way

Fook me what is the egr housing? is that what the pipe is connecting to?

What causes this kind of thing happening?

Is it something i'm doing? Am I driving in a way that is making this happen?

Yes - and you're looking for any pieces of metal that are missing basically

What causes this kind of thing happening?

Yeah stop driving like an idiot

Not your fault mate - its the stupid clip design; under pressure the hoses move about and the lugs wear down until eventually there is nothing left to hold and your pipes blow off

sadly it will happen fairly often

get all the pipework checked out and for the sake of a few quid replace ALL the clips  and keep some spare in your glovebox

Mine hasn't done it in a long time !! It has only happened once this year just after my remap so all good :) I would say never put the same clip back on once it has popped off always change it for a new one !! ( i also have about 10 in my glove box)

LOL so I take it I need to invest in some of these clips then.

Where do you guys buy them from? How much are they?

Also I hope this isn;t one of those daft questions that newbies keep asking but, how do you take the plastic cover off the engine to get to this hose?

I took it to the garage and the guy there said I need to change the pipe as there is a metal bit that the clip clips onto and apparently that's broken off so the clip can't go back on properly.

He aslo said it's very common, the garage is a VAG specialist.

I'd check it yourself lets face  it a garage would rather change a pipe than a 30p clip :)

Buy a EGR Delete from allard and cut the cut off the original pipe.

What is all this about mate? I'm new to VW's and not mechanically minded so please explain, also what is the benefit of this mod?

Its easy to fit, you could do it in less than half an hour.

Guide thanks to Rhyso for showing me it - http://www.bazmcc.com/faqs/EGRDelete.html

What you need - http://www.fuelefficientsystems.co.uk/index.php?page=egr-replacement-power-pipe-kits

can you not just get it mapped out or do you need to do both install the delete pipe and get i mapped out?
Title: Re: Urgent help with TDI 130 PD, video of problem in post
Post by: Steve_PD on 20 October 2009, 20:28
just get it mapped, Ive never had any problems with that pipe, its the intercooler inlet and outlets which have caused me problems

He has damaged his lugs/connector and the Allard fits directly onto the existing pipe - the lug/connector.

And it is mapped out with some remaps. If you have had a remap and still have your EGR, clean it out or get the delete pipe.

is it worth gettin the pipe even though its been mapped out?

Not really but the allard allows you to fit a boost gauge easily and means you don't have to spend hours cleaning it.
