Title: Mk3 electric window issue
Post by: bigstuff1984 on 17 October 2009, 23:37
Hi everyone
New to this forum but pleased to be here
Im a trainee mechanic. Using my newly developed knowledge of cars and with the help on occasion off my boss, ive been working on my mk3 golf project.
It started its life as a 1.8 normal golf with blue interior and have now converted it into a gti. And very proud i am of doing so too. I totally stripped out the blue interior and put black gti interior inside. I put on gti fron and rear bumpers on it then got it sprayed in old english white ( i know that may not be a proper volkswagon colour but i like it). I took out an 1.8 engine and put a 2.0 8v engine in its place from a doner gti i brought that failed mot due to that good thing.....rust!!!! I changed all wiring looms over from the gti donar car to this one. And changed the front electric window wiring looms as well.
However my front electric windows arnt working.??
Firstly the windows would only work when the drivers door was open, wouldnt work when closed. I narrowed it done to a dodgy door switch that operates interior light. Put additional earth wire from white connector block on fuse block to the body and it seemed to work......until i put door cards back on and started car up. Now it wont work at all. Very occasionally it works but then stops again. I have gone over the wiring from drivers side to fusebox, and my wiring diagrams are on standby to check again. But i was wondering if anybody had experianced this problem before and how they fixed it.
Any comments would be muchly apprechaited!!!
Many Thanks
Paul

Hello there..

The Mk3 is known for it's electric window issues, however, in your case as your swapping looms over etc it's really hard to say where to look.
From the symptoms you describe it's obviously electrical and not mechanical problems.. the rubber boot between door and pillar where all the wires run would be my first port of call but you must have been in there with your re wiring anyway..then switches/earths/connectors..can only suggest go over your work at this stage.

yeh this could be anything if you have changed the whole lot. Did the car have elecy windows before? did you swap the fusebox?

Try looking at the converting manual to electric windows thread, and i have also made an electric windows troubleshooting thread, both are found in the maintainance section.

Thanks guys for your info. I swapped all wiring looms over from the doner golf. The golf also had front electric windows.
Ive been tackeling it today with wiring diagrams. I may of found the problem but not sure yet. Ive only done tests so far on the positive side of the loom but found that the black/yellow wire that runs from the ignition to both door motors has no power when the ignition is switched on. There is power going from the battery to the the ignition barrel. the is also continuiety from black/yellow on motor to the connector block in the door.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH bloody electrics!!!!! lol

With what you've done so far you'd know more than me anyway regards electrics on those things.. A pain i know but stick with it, hopefully you'll get there.

quick fix is to put your ignition wire directly to a 12v power-source if you are sure you have the power at the ignition switch, Ignition switches do go but unless you notice other problems relating to the switch it may just be the wire going to it.
