Title: Is there a wire missing?
Post by: Steve_B on 17 October 2009, 15:53
The background to this photo is that I've been having problems starting the car after it's been left standing for a few days. So charged up the battery and left it for a few days without connecting it and it started fine, so thought the next thing to check was earths. Whilst undoing the battery earth strap for cleaning had a nosy round and saw there was a lug with no wire attached on what I think is the solenoid on the starter motor.

Sorry for the bad pic btw, camera phones for you. So is this lug circled meant to have a wire attached or is the red and black wire on the other lug the earth?

Cheers
Steve

Ah, gti 8v btw

Some starter motors seem to have this extra lug, I think its the difference between K-Jet ones and others... doesn't make any difference on my 8v digi, I wouldn't worry about it!

That's what i wanted to hear  Didn't think it was important just wanted to check. Just have to wait and see if the voltage drain is fixed now!

Isn't the 3rd pin on the starter for the cold start injector?

ben is correct, its for the cold start system. but this is only used on k-jet 8v and 16v mk2s. if you have a digifant then this wire is not used :)
