Title: 2.0 TDI 170 PROBLEM
Post by: Schuey on 16 October 2009, 23:27
My 2.0 170 TDI makes a kind of back pressure & vibration (Like the exhaust is blowing) at around 2000rpm, engine sounds ok but fuel consumption has dropped to 30mpg or less?  Also it does seem a little underpowered.

Any ideas?

sorry TBH  it has an OBD port for a reason.

these engines are complex creatures and speculating about faults from symptoms  even when its infount of you can lead to expensive and pointless wild goose chases. really any diagnosis over a forum is odds on going to be a load of bollox.

i would suggest ether getting your self a copy vagcom and a lead from rosstec, or a pikey one off ebay.  that should point out the issue more presisely  but it sounds as if its turbo / boost controll related

Yeah already put it on VAGCOM & no faults, hence the reason for my question.  Lots of people on Audi forums have stated MAF problems on A3 2.0 TDI's..............Maybe a similar problem to them.....?

MAF's and EGR valves are known problems on diesels.

is it when backing off the throttle? i've had that before at work on a Leon and it was the turbo itself!!! i highly recommend putting it into a VAG specialist for diagnosis

No it only happens when you accelerate through 2000 -2500 revs.

do you have thick black smoke coming out of the back??

Could possibly be a boost leak  :undecided:

Nope nothing at all, just the vibration/humming from the rear?

Stuck on this, could it be the exhaust?  Does sound like the vibration is from that area?

Blocked cat or backbox ? if it dont chuck out black smoke then boost pipes are ok ! if no codes then maybe exhaust prob , can you unbolt just the rear box and try without it or is it a one piece factory system every car seems to have lately ?
trouble is if its blocked exhaust prob it should dob it at all revs and be underpowered

It's definitely lost power!, Emissions are fine so expect it wouldn't be the cat?  Car was serviced by a main dealer last week & they said nothing was wrong.

I may take off the back box & give it a try then.  :undecided:

Thanks

need to get someone with VAGCOM to go for a drive and monitor the values of the MAF as it sounds more and more than the likely culprit
