Hi Guys and gals
Just a quick question ???.
I've had my 1981 mk1 gti for around 6 months, and I reckon it's time it deserves a service.
The thing is I have a local mechanic who does all the work on the car, and doesn't charge too much.
He doesn't have a very big garage and he only has one bloke to help him.
Shud i let him service the car, or shud I go to the authorised VW dealers (Reg Vardy in leicester) to get the job done.
Any help with my pride and joy will be much appreciated.
Thanking you in advance :)

i wouldnt use the stealership if i were u. to be honest there's not many that are exactly on the ball with anything older than a mark 3.
i went to one vw specialist that said ' how am i supposed to know whats wrong if i cant plug in the ecu ' ::)
so unless your still after that full volkswagen service history, i really wouldnt bother.
most mark 1s are enthusiast owned now so any prospective buyers will be happy aslong as there are lots of proof and receipts 8)

agree with that^
there is no point going to the VW main dealer. if you can find a dub specialist in your area that would be best but otherwise, stick to the local guy if you have been happy with his work in the past :)

I had a mk1 once, and every six months from brand new, it had been serviced at a vw stealership. So i had it serviced at the stealership too ;) :D
Depends what your local one is like tho. Luckily theres a dude at mine that can do old dubs ;) :P

My 1983 MK1 will need a service too and wanted to ask the same question. I can either get it done in Leicester or down south (London, Reading, Sandhurst, Basingstoke...!) and wanted to be pointed in the right direwct of someone not too expensive and knos what he is doing! Mine is a 1.9 TSR engine and want it serviced and tuned up to smooth out some rough idling. I did see a post on this site a while back about an ex VW mechanic in Leicester that is supposed to be good, but can't remember his details. Anyone know them or can recomend anyone? Cheers guys ;D
