Hey,
When i cleaned my throttle i found oil around the air intake under the casing at the top of this picture;

a friend thinks is the piston rings gone meaning oil is being pushed up the tube into the air housing
any ideas? sorry for the lack of proper pics
cheers

just the breather pipes. Hence why I'm making an oil catch can http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=131909.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=131909.0).
Just clean it with a toothbrush and carb cleaner and your all set.

so the fact mines got fresh oil sitting in it isn't a bad thing? i thought it was only for fumes rather than oil, although i guess it would collect over time
if i clean it out and week later it's oily again, what would this mean?
cheers khare

it is fumes that are supposed to go through the breather, but from the high pressures oil is forced out. As you said, it collects over time. If you clean it out, it will get oily again over X amount of time. I clean mine out once a month to keep the car running as smooth and trouble free as possible!

cheers buddy

As long as the car aint using too much oil, air fuel leaks past the piston rings during compression especially as the engine wears and pressurises the crankcase, that pipe relieves the presure and recycles it through the engine and as Khare says unfortunately some oil gets forced up too.

piston rings do commonly go on them engines, but you would hear it knocking.
the oil coming from the breather is nothing to worry about. strictly speaking it shouldn't be there, but in practice it always is! unless there are other more serious symptoms do not worry!!

the engine sounds like im rattling a collection tin
realllly really tappety, beyond all belief
cheers for help guys

tappety noise will be the tappets. Drain 1 liter of oil from the car, then replace that liter with ATF (automatic transmission fluid). Run it like so for a week, then drain the oil and replace it with new fresh stuff, remember to do the filter too. This will clean out the tappets and the internals of the engine VERY well  This should shut the tappets up and give smoother running

If the top end is really noisey, then i would get the oil pressure checked.
By all means use a flushing agent, but do not drive the car with it in it.

+1 get the oil pressure checked.

if that is the case dont panic. my 1.4 had a really bad knocking problem (you will hear it refered to as piston slap).
despite the noise it kept motoring on until i sold it, and i believe its still going now. so thats nearly two years and 15000-20000 miles with a bad knocking noise - but still it could go at any time!
-
im not overly worried about it as the car's had the noise since i got it 3 years, it's still going at 155k, but im always thinking for the future
I've heard mixed views on running the car on flush/atf for a week, some say leave the car running for an hour with it, some say run it normal for a week..
im just going to run it normal until something goes wrong, doesnt seem too bad.
