All mk3s came with AAA Vr6 engines which were all 12v.
The 24v engine is the 4motion that comes in the mk4 golf.
Vr6 engines were used right through to the R32, which is essentially a vr6 bored to 3.2 litres.
Mk3 12v VR6's came in 2 types, obd1 and obd2.
The obd1 had a dizzy, obd1 ecu, and a diferent throttle body and inlet manifold.
The OBD2 had a coilpack, different ecu, tb and inlet manifold.
They also made a change over engine, which is an OBD1 with a coilpack, still running the old tb and inlet.
Also they changed the rocker cover from metal to plastic.
You need to sign up to VR6OC as that forum has all the answers and help you can ever need, that you simply wont find on here.
Believe me :)

this thread shows pics of how to tell if you have an OBD1 or OBD2

They reckon that the OBD2 makes about 10bhp more than the OBD1, althoug all rado 2.9 VR6s were obd1, so you can always fit the 2.9 throttle body and inlet to gain more power ;)

All Golf mk3 VR6's were AAA apart from the very rare Syncro which with the Corrado used a ABV (2.9) however Usa spec Corrados were 2.8.
