Hi
I am pretty close to getting a MK5 Golf GTi and was just wondering about the standard equipment. I think I am right in saying that the GTI came as standard with most of the features of the Luxury pack like auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror etc. But did the 05 GTIs come with the front footwell illumination and rear reading lights as standard too or were they part of the luxury pack that had to be specified by the purchaser?
Also my car has electric folding mirrors, so does that mean it has the puddle lights?
My car has the front armrest but has the in-dash 6cd changer, does that mean I can buy an Ipod connection thingy and put it in the armrest....is this easy/cheap?
And how does the Premium (ten speakers) sound system sound?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks for any help.

Hi,
Yes the GTI comes with the auto wipers, lights, dimming mirror, footwell lights and rear reading lights as standard (known as the convienience pack on the other models). The luxury kit includes the electrically folding mirrors and auto tilt exterior mirrors when you select reverse and the puddle lights. Don't really think there was much else in the luxury pack.
I would look at an aftermarket kit for the ipod as tbh the standard ipod adaptor is neither cheap or that good. It plays the ipod fine but the interface is limited to either 5 playlists or it just plays the entire content of your ipod in song order. Its also worth noting that if you have one of the newer ipods the dock won't charge them as apple changed the pin configuration in the newer ones (touch gen 2 for one).
The ten speaker set up was standard on 05 plates but penny pinching VW cut this down to 8 speakers from around 2006 onwards. Over and above this you might have the optional amp (have a look under the plastic cover under the passenger seat if its there or not), but I don't think this was that well reveived by those who paid for it. I found that the speaker set up is pretty good, but the HU makes a huge difference. When I got my car it had the terrible RCD300 (and the rcd500 is the same except it has the 6 disk changer) and I thought the sound system was rubbish, lots of distortion and vibration if you turn the volume up. I upgraded to the MFD2 sat nav and the improvement in sound quality was like night and day. So speakers are fine unless you are really into your music but HU is the limiting factor.
Being an 05 plate it will have certain 'features' that the accountants removed from later models like blue tinted glass (rather than green - looks nicer IMO), the aerial is integrated into the rear screen, 10 speakers as standard, silver ashtray cover, three reading lamps at the front vs 2 in later models etc

Hi
Thanks for the reply it was really helpful. I didn't know about all of those little differences between 05 GTIs and the later models.
May have to turn to Ebay to find a sat nav system to replace the RCD500 system I have!!
One thing I just thought of is that does a TomTom ONE fit into the ashtray to save the wire trailing all over the dash?

My 2007 model year still has 10 speakers. Wasn't the three door GTIs which only had 8 speakers?

That was only with the optional factory fitted 'Volkswagen Soundpack' - and yes, it was utter shyte.

Humm, even with the factory fit SatNav and 10 speakers, I still find the speakers quite poor. :undecided:

The blue tints didn't look right with certain colours, hence why they changed to green.
The radio aerial is still integrated into the rear screen, on all models - but some have an additional one on the roof too.
The silver ashtray cover and surround is quite an easy retro fit - but not cheap though!

jayboy, if you havn't actually purchased yet, if you want to know the 'correct' full specification for an individual car, then you can PM me the full VIN, and I can look up directly with Volkswagen Germany for the correct spec.
Obviously, to use the PM, you need to have a minimum of 10 forum posts first though - so nip into the new members section of the forum and introduce yourself!
-
OK thanks, I'll PM you the VIN once I have 10 posts.
-
Oh and forgot to say it really is amazing how much info and help you can get from forums like this one.
Thanks a lot guys.

Can you do the same for me T_T? Even though i've had my car 8 weeks i bet i dont know what the full spec is

Typical my post count seems to have got stuck

Sure, anyone who wants help like that is welcome to ask me  - as long as you don't mind when I happen to take some 'enforced' forum downtime.

I have a 3dr 07 car with RCD300 and 10 speaker grills however there seems to be no sound out of the mids in the front, so I assume when they cut from 10 to 8 spkrs they kept the orginal door cards with 10 grills?
Oh and whether it is 8 or 10 spkrs in mine they sound pants....

VW do that on most of their cars. The Polo has rear door cards with speaker grilles, yet most of them only have front speakers.

The midrange speakers were only discontinued from MY06 for RCD300 / 500.

Its subjective but I assure you the MFD2 sound quality is a quantum leap over the RCD300 it replaced.

The blue tint looks cracking with red. Again though thats somewhat subjective.
As for the rear aerial, I know that for the MY04 like mine that if you had nav or phone prep from the factory there was an aerial on the roof but otherwise there wasn't. On all the later models (maybe from MY05 onwards :undecided:) they all have at least the bee sting so something changed. Seems odd that they would provide the more expensive rear screen version AND the bee sting if there was no need.
This list of MY changes certianly indicates that the rear screen aerial was discontinued, but maybe for factory nav the roof aerial is used only for nav and the radio is still picked up from the rear screen?

Nope, still not correct. The RCD500 has ALWAYS had 10 speakers!

OK, I agree that the MFD2 sound quali may slightly better than the RCD300 - but to say it is a 'quantum leap' may be over-egging it a little. IMVHO - the MFD2 with the 10 speakers in the Golf (ie, close to the top-spec offering on a Golf) sounds worse than say an Audi A3 without Bose and with the poverty spec radio.
Anyway, personal 'opinions' aside, the reason why the MFD2 sound better than the RCD300 and RCD500 is simply because the MFD2 has a slightly more powerful amplifier - 4x25watt, whereas the RCD300/500 have 4x20watt.

Maybe I didn't explain with enough 'geekness'. :embarassed: There are ONLY three rear screens available for the entire range of Mk5 Golfs - the early GTI blue tint, the green tint, and the black privacy glass. ALL rear screens of all Mk5 Golfs, from the very start of Mk5 production to the very end of Mk5 production - have aerial 'antenna elements' (two separate antenna circuits, to feed the twin-tuner head units) integrated into the rear glass, in exactly the same method as the heated rear screen elements. However, in order for the rear screen antennas to work, they need to be powered with the addition of two separate aerial 'amplifiers' - which are mounted each side of the rear screen behind the plastic trim - and this is called in 'Volkswagen/Audi speak' as a 'diversity antenna' (some Audis actually have four aerial amps ).
However, I just learnt sommat new - if you have a remote controlled 'auxiliary heater', you will also get the shark fin! :nerd:
Lets try and confirm this from ETKA (for factory fitted options, not 'dealer fitted') -
Shark fins
you get a plain shark fin (with a single channel input), along with twin diversity rear screen amps for:
- remote controlled 'auxiliary heater'
- or GSM phone prep
You get a plain shark fin (but with dual/triple channel inputs), along with the twin diversity amps for:
- GPS navigation system
- with or without GSM phone prep
You can also get a plain 'dummy' shark fin (NO channel inputs), along with the twin diversity amps for:
- cars without remote heaters
- and without GSM prep
- and without GPS navi
You can also get a plain 'dummy' shark fin (NO channel inputs), with NO diversity amps for:
- cars without remote heaters
- and without GSM prep
- and without GPS navi
- and without any radio

Traditional long bee-sting whip aerials
You can also get a plain long stem bee-sting, with NO diversity amps for:
- radio or radio/CD only - no navi, no fone, no remote heater
Combined shark fin with stubby bee-sting
You get a combination shark fin (but with either dual, or triple channel inputs) with integrated stubby bee sting, with NO diversity amps for:
- with AM/FM tuner
- with or without GPS navigation system
- with or without GSM phone prep
- with or without remote controlled heater
- with or without DAB digital tuner
You get a combination shark fin (but with either dual, or triple channel inputs) with integrated stubby bee sting, along with twin diversity amps for:
- with AM/FM tuner
- with TV tuner
- or with satellite tuner
- with or without GPS navigation system
- with or without GSM phone prep
- with or without remote controlled heater
- with or without DAB digital tuner
Fully digested and understood? <insert cheesy grin smiley, or head hitting brick wall smiley as appropriate> !!
Oh, and don't even think about asking for dates!
This list of MY changes certianly indicates that the rear screen aerial was discontinued, but maybe for factory nav the roof aerial is used only for nav and the radio is still picked up from the rear screen?
The rear screen aerial was NEVER 'discontinued' - all VW did do was implement 'differing' ways of collecting the various signals. It would seem from the above that there is simply no consistency by VW!
To be continued . . . .
-
. . . Continued from previous post
- - - - - - - - -
MY05 Changes were :-
• Seat belt audible warning on front seats.
Needed to get five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test. Earlier Mk5s only got four stars, soley because of the lack of 'seat belt warning'!
MY06 Changes were:-
• Open ended spanner in toolkit discontinued
• "Assistance in Europe" manulas discontinued in Handbooks
Tight b'stards. Anyway, I got myself a 10x13 o/e spanner - and I also got a very handy double-ended Torx driver to go in the black screwdriver handle. :smug:
And I never new VW had Europe Assistance in the first place!
• Roof Aerial in conjunction with RCD300/500/Plus replaces aerial in rear windscreen
Not quite as simple as that basic sentance though!
• Mid range speaker discontinued in RCD300 and RCD300 Plus
So as I correctly stated, the RCD500 and RNS-MFD2 still got the 10 speakers as standard.
MY07 Changes were :-
• Automatic employment of warning lights under emergency braking
Nope, not in the UK! That is very wrong!
• Rear headrests reduced in size
Nope again. MY07 still had full size rear head restraints!
MY08 Changes were :-
• Rod aerial replaces ‘shark fin’ aerial when the optional satellite navigation system is ordered.
Wrong yet again - it was the 'combined' shark fin with stubby bee sting.
• Introduction of new generation immobiliser. Generation IV.
What was the difference then? An immobiliser is an immobiliser - it either 'immobilises' or it don't! :undecided:
• AC button instead of ECON button for climatronic air conditioning
• New feature on climatronic air conditioning unit. Air quality sensor with automatic changeover switch.
First one is a victory for 'common sense', and the second is well cool - Audis have had them for a while, and they work very well.
• Removal of optional factory fit telephone preparation. Available as aftersales fit only.
WTF - how stoooopid - unless the loom still remains! :undecided:
MY09 Changes were :-
• RCD 210 with 4 speakers replaced RCD 300 with 4 speakers
• Hill-hold function standard on 6 speed and 7 speed DSG
Two 'worthy' upgrades/improvements.
