i'm gutted. the mark 6 gti was only 3 weeks old. just curbed it today, one alloy but still mad. they're the monza shadows, 18 inch upgrade from the basic standard 17 inch alloys. any ideas on what to do. should i go to the vw dealer or some alloy repair co? the finish is what bothers me, diamond cut look. the thing is usually when i curb alloys, the alloy is the same , ie no finish on surface. however these scratches on the edge of the alloy are white, like plastic.

http://www.lepsons.com/home.phtml (http://www.lepsons.com/home.phtml) do them but I think they are dear.
You think you have problems, a dog ran out on me on Friday, only had the car 5 days and I swerved while doing about 30mph and mounted a traffic island. Fecked my Vancouver alloy to a point I wouldn't trust it with a repair and took a big chunk out the sidewall tyre. Dealer wants £318 for the alloy and that's with 25% off. Plus I'll be over £100 for a new tyre.
My wife had to hide sharp objects and the paracetamol from me on Friday!!

I don't think it's possible to avoid doing this. I did in one of my 17" wheels yesterday. It seemed to damage very very easily - much more easily than the alloys on my last car.
I'm just glad I didn't upgrade to the 18s. I can take a relaxed attitude to some dents on the standard wheels.

There seem to be an awful lot of people mangling their nice new Monzas in a very short period of time...

Does it depend on the tyres they are fitted with?
I know I haven't got Monza Shadows on my GT but my Bridgestone tyres actually overhang the alloy so I could in effect rub up against the kerb and it would only be the tyre that was rubbing.
Most shadows I've seen seem to stick out more than the tyre.

I think mostly it depends on the driver
However, the 18 monza design does leave the face exposed. Even tyres with rim protection are going to have a hard time preventing damage if you rub these up against a kerb, which is one of the reasons I don't like them.

I agree and that's one of the reasons I don't care for them much: they look as if they've been fitted with the wrong tyres.

That's bad news for both of you guys; hope you get sorted soon.
Interesting points though in relation to wheel / tyre sizes; never thought about that before in relation to cars. I know in motorcycle land it would be one of the first things I'd think of.

Accidents and canine advertures aside, I've never kerbed an alloy in about ten years of driving...
Unlucky though, guys.
-
Accidents and having to swerve to avoid accidents, i can understand. Curbing the alloys because you simply can't drive or judge what your doing properly has no excuse.

Guys, Sorry to hear about all this! Its a real pain when your car is so new. Just hope the repair will meet your satisfaction!

i nearly agree with you. i wouldn't swerve for a dog, i'd slow down if it was safe, if not i'd muller it.
second - yes. if you care so much about the condition of the alloys, park more carefully. before you spend £££ repairing them; think - if you were daft enough to do it once, you are probably daft enough to kerb it again.

I you did hit a dog it would probably take you off the road. not very safe them old mobiles

 to be fair it looks like he's hit a few dogs judging by the state of his motor!!

Its a natural reaction to swerve to avoid another life!!
Plus I think hitting a dog at 30 would do a fair bit of damage to the car front.
What are your views on unruly children that take their time crossing when the green man is on?

"dude them alloys are naff. why didn't you get the monza shadows"
Dude I have some AEZ wheels no marks or 4 monza shadows for sale
-
i reckon shrocco is just messing with us, of course he would swerve whether it be dog or child. after all, if he hit anything it would dislodge all that rust and his car would start falling apart!

It is a banger though, init  whats that on his headlight ? Don't tell me its a washer, looks like a spiders leg to me.

unlucky mate, these things happen, no a guy round my way who repairs wheels with polished/diamond cut faces.
ive always been lucky with my alloys never curbed one on any of my cars, im so carefull.
-
here is the damage. not really as bad as i said, thats because i had a few days for it to settle. dont think ill bother to get it fixed as its only minor.. pic shows it but alloy is filthy tho.

Are those wheels laquered or painted???

Are those wheels laquered or painted???
not a clue. definitely not painted. though the scratch reveals a white plastic like finish. alloys are very dirty btw, not scratched all over as it looks. some of it is glare- they're very shiny. the alloys appear to be diamond cut so it is totally different to the 17 inch standards or the mark 5 versions.

how do you find the dunlops? any good?
they were panned really badly on this forum
personally they seem fine.

thats what we all thought until we changed . not bad in the wet though
-
Well, no urgent reason to change what are a set of very new tyres right now. Must wear them down with more "spirited driving" :)
Tho remins me that I haven't checked the tyre pressures, could still be on some ridiculous delivery level!
-
Mine has Dunlops what tyre pressure do you find best?
