Title: CV Boot repair
Post by: Khare on 12 October 2009, 18:19
OK. End of next month I have the MOT. My o/s inner boot and my n/s outer boot are split. Is there anyway, I can "patch" them up to get through MOT? I don't have the:
a) money
b) time
c) space
d) tools
to do it in.

Is there anyway, or anything that I can buy/use on the CV boot to patch it up? (I'm thinking some sort of glue based product to stitch up the split).

They cost about six quid and would take half an hour to do. Need sockets, hex socket/allen key and hammer.

Take the wheel off, take the calliper off one side with hex socket/allen key (may just have 12/13mm nut TBH) then take the carrier off. Then the disc and undo the hub nut. Take off the ball joint and you should have enough space to get the CV out, knock it off with the hammer, replace boot & job done.

Sounds harder then it is.

I know but I just don't have the tool to do it, so I'd have to invest in tooling, which costs money. I'll see how it goes.

Don't you need an oddly long allen key???

You can buy cv boots that wrap around and then glue together. Some you need to cut the old boot off and some wrap around the old boot left in place. Don't know what ones are available for the Golf.

A couple of problems with these:

Everything will need to be clean for the glue to adhere properly.
More importantly with a split boot dirt will have got into the cv joint and this will increase wear in the joint and cost you more money in the long run.

I personaly wouldn't go for a repair of the boot. Do the job properly and you will only need to do it once.

I know Paul, CV boot replacements are on the list, it's just that I need something quick, cheap and easy just to get it through the MOT next month. I will get round to replacing the old, worn boots at some point, and re-greasing the joints.

Get a glue on one then, but I must worn, they are complete crap but will get you through an MOT, just bung LOADS of grease in the split first then clean with petrol.

If they're on the list anyway, just glue on ones will do. :)

I would replace them now, you stand a chance of knackering the joints if you leave them.

Yes and you're an idiot for leaving them.

Now man the f*ck up, get the shafts off and replace the boots before you need to replace all four CVs, cos that WILL hurt.

Guess I need to man up soon then  Drive shaft bolts are one of my nightmares.

When's the MOT?  Sounds like you need a seriously off-peak ferry return in the next few weeks.

MOT November the 24th. I honestly don't know if the car will pass or fail. Only surface thing I can see it failing on is the CV boots. Rest of the car as you know looks pretty solid from underneath, including the sills. There is now no PAS leaking, and bushes all seem fine. Suspension seems a tad used however.

As already said, replace them ASAP.
If the joints aren't knocking then you will probably get away with stripping them and cleaning them with petrol/white spirit.
You won't be able to get the shaft out of the hub without a puller on a mk3 gti/vr6, anyone that says you can tap it out, hasn't done the job.

+1 im doing it #atm and the gti/vr6 splined driveshaft bits are 'bonded' to the hub, according to elsawin. I welded up my own puller, just like the proper one+ thought i could get away with m10 bolt to push put the shaft, no way sheered right off, now im goining with M16, and it had better not sheer that off!
You do need 'special' splined/star bit to unbolt the inner cv from the gear box hub, i cut away the boot to get better access.
isnt too bad a job just right tools as usual, dismantle cvs and give them a good clean out, you should get a pack of grease to repack them with. refitting is reverse of removal lol

Admittedly not. I was told they are the same as Note's, which knock right off.

they7 might do on the lesser models, i also read that some have flattened splines for a sort of interference fit, these ones you clean + give a light oiling on replacement, the bonded ones should be cleaned+ some sealent applied, some locktight would probbo do
+ man the FU(K up khare bear

GTI and 16V shafts on Golf3 definitely have some sort of sealant/locking compound on them.

A 3-arm puller will push them out pretty easily, or you may find they've been done before and whoever did them previously didn't use the sealant.

I have to say I'd be quite windy about using sealant on them as well as properly tightening up the hub nuts.  Aside from anything, it makes the job a pain in the a$$ the next time you come to do it.  Plus I've never seen this sealant in a CV boot replacement kit - if it was that important it'd be in the kit.

The outers on my Passat are even tougher to release - you wind the bolt that secures the CV into the CV and it goes tight, so you keep on winding until it goes BANG and the CV comes off

Its not just the sealant, the mk3 splines seem to 'bind' when trying to knock the shaft out, not sure if its a tighter fit.
