Title: Mk3 1.4 oil leak
Post by: Sonic2 on 12 October 2009, 08:46
So, i've replaced the sump gasket thinking the leak was coming from there (and the offside track rod end in the process as it was siezed up and needed to get it off to get the driveshaft out of the way of the sump bolts) but its still leaking.

I did an oil change at the same time, filter has been tightened up fully, as has the sump plug.

from where its landing on the floor, it looks like its leaking from the offside somewhere.

kinda loosing patience with it now

Anyone got any ideas?

Not sure if the 1.4 has an oil cooler, but it could be leaking from it.

My Gti is.

The cooler is the housing that the oil filter attaches to.

There is a nut (27mm I think) that can work its way loose.

Best thing to do is to degrease the whole area as best you can, then run your car and look to see where it is leaking.

Dont think I have an oil cooler on mine, as its the most basic engine in the mk3 range, but i'll check it out.

its almost like its leaking from higher up the engine and leaking down, but where from, I cant tell, with all the belts/pulleys in the way.

Definately oil too, coolant appears to be ok. Didnt see any cracks on the bas of the engine when the sump gasket was replaced, so that rules the very bottom part of the engine out.

As mentioned above, get the steam cleaner on the engine and then it will be easier to see where the leak is coming from.

I have given it a jetwash once, but didnt want to risk getting water in the plugs/ignition

I have a bad feeling its going to be an engine out job, not sure why, but with the way my lucks been going recently... lol

ok, so from my understanding so far, the leak is worse when the engine is running.

so, if the leak was for example, coming from the end of the camshaft, is that a big job?

I am just looking at possabilities right now...

take a look at the oil pressure sensor, on top of the block at the back;

quite common apparently and the way the oil goes down the back can be quite misleading

costs about £12 for a genuine sensor from VW

+1 oil pressure sensor, mine was pissing oil all over the place, couldnt work it out for ages as it was getting oil everywhere

Fingers crossed and thanks for the heads up

I am going to check that today!

I'm guessing theres a seal underneath it (similar to the reversing light switch) that just gives up after a while.

lol not quite, there is a copper washer but thats not usually the problem, it usualy makes its way up and out between the plastic top+the spade connector

Ah I see, never had to take the pressure switch off before, but i've done the reversing light switch before.

cant check it now as im in a call centre until 5  but I shall check it out then.

Must admit, it would be the last place i'd check with the way its coming out the bottom (and has been) but definately sounds possible.

Even my dad and his next door neighbour didnt see anything when looking at it and thought the seal with the way the old one was looking with sealant on it.

There's a rubbery gromet which goes over the top of the sensor making it difficult to tell to look there..

It's not a definite ofcourse, but its a good bet.

When you say the leak is worst when running, it may well be it only leaks when running.

Keeping in mind that it takes time to run down the engine.  It will still drip down even after 30 minutes after stopping the engine.

If thats the case - it won't be around the sump area.
Title: Re: Mk3 1.4 oil leak... and now the header tank is hissing
Post by: Sonic2 on 13 October 2009, 08:27
Thanks guys, its definately the pressure switch, pulled off the rubber cover and its leaking from there  :smug:

i'll take a trip to the vw garage in my lunch break, its only 5 minutes away from where I work. hopefully I can get it off with an adjustable wrench (Its very close to the dipstick mount), if not i'll ask my dads mate for a big enough socket to get on there.

Also noticed the coolant header tank is hissing slightly so i will get another one on there from the vw breakers when I can - 2 faults located in less than 24 hours!... :smug:

Ty

Never would have thought of looking there, it is tucked away a little bit. It was hooning out of there!

The header tank explains my slow loss of coolant too, so its been a good time getting the car back to shape.

VW didnt have it, (£11) got a non oem one from a parts store next door to where I work, less than a fiver  :smug:

However, couldnt fit it in my lunchbreak as the biggest socket ive got is 17mm, and the adjustable wrench wouldnt get on it, even after taking off the engine hoist locator off

So, i'm off to my dads after work for a bigger spanner, or socket!

This poxy thing WILL come off!  :smug: lol

yeah not difficult with the right sized socket at all, would have been off with my adjustable wrench if it was the blue one next to it!

Just no access there on the white one with a wrench...

All sorted now, just gotta steam clean the engine down now, and stay away from the carb and air intake.

For anyone doing the same job, you'll need a 24mm socket, or spanner, but the latter makes it much harder.

thanks again
