Im a newbie to the forum but would like to share the nightmare im having purchasing a RNS510 version b SATNAV for my MK6 GTI. This started about a month ago when i searched on ebay to upgrade to a RNS510 sat nav. I found one with a seller who deals in them all the time, he offered me the latest firmware, 2009 maps, free fitting etc etc.
I paid a deposit straight away via paypal and thats when the problems started. Every time i suggested coming to him to fit he said he couldnt, this went on for over 3 weeks and in the end i got fed up and told him to post it and i would fit myself. When i finally got it in the post it had deep gouges on the black fascia and scratches on the screen. Not happy at all!
I emailed him and no reply then i phoned him and after a few tries got him on the phone, he said he must have sent me the wrong one and would exhange it for a MINT one. I got his address (reluctantly) and set off on the four hour round trip. When i got there the address he gave me was for a block of flats but he failed to mention this or give me a flat number so there i am staring at a block of 40 flats with no flat number and a dodgy sat nav in my hand.
I then tried to phone him but no answer, i then texted him to tell him i was outside but no reply, i then tried to call him again but HE SWITCHED HIS PHONE OFF!! I wasnt happy at this time(in a fighting mood) and sent him one last text and hey presto got a call telling me he would be there in 20mins but wouldnt give me the flat number.Half an hour past and finally he turned up and showed me two other sat navs in his boot that were in worse state than mine!
I was well pissed off by now but all i could get off the guy is that he was getting a batch of 10 in on monday and would send me a mint one overnight for tues.
So im back to square one after a month and less £550 waiting to see if this one turns up on tues and what condition its in.
SO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU BUY FROM ON EBAY
-
Can you not dispute the goods via paypal?
-
Yes will have to but will wait until tues and see if a MINT replacement turns up!
-
I have to say my £510 one from Lithuania is pretty MINT.
The screen and dull plastic bits of the unit are immaculate. The only marks are on the black shiney face where it has a few hairline scratches - the kind you only see in certain lights.
Unless you get a MINT one then demand a refund. If he's not prepared to give you a refund, then do a PayPal dispute.
I know alot of people are wary about buying from Lithuania / Poland etc - but the few people I know who've had stereos from there are over the moon with them!
Don't forget to tell us who the seller is when you get it all sorted so that people know to avoid them.
-
I dont mind one with maybe tiny hairline scratches but this one had deep gouges on the side where it looked like a screwdriver had been at it and scratches on the screen!
Will let you know on tuesday if it turns out good and then will name and shame the seller so someone else doesnt get caught out like me.

Wow, and to think I was going to take the plunge and but one off eBay! Makes me think twice now

I spoke to a few ebay sellers when I was hunting for a bargain RNS510. Most of them are pretty upfront and will tell you any marks the unit has. They don't want to have to go through disputes etc, so its easier for them to just be honest. I had one guy sending me pictures as he said it had a small mark on the front. It turned out that it was a SMALL mark - about the size of a pin prick! Unfortunately someone else managed to BUY IT NOW before I did.
Anyway... dont let this one story put you off. There are dozens of regular sellers out there - and most of them have 100% feedback... so their stuff must be pretty good. sundaydriver just sounds like he's been very unlucky.
-
Dont get me wrong i think ive just been unlucky and picked a bad seller. The picture of the unit in his ad was absoluetly mint, no marks at all. I had a mk4 Golf GT TDI and bought a sat nav for that off another ebay seller and it was perfect.
But i bet the two that he showed me today will probably go to another unlucky buyer as he's still got more RNS510's listed on ebay!
-
Any chance you could post the sellers name so that we can avoid ?
-
Yes will do but want to wait till tues when and if the unit is replaced, dont want to give him an excuse not to sort the problem.

Probably happened as it was wrenched from some other poor souls GTi

Cheers lads, whilst doing my research on the RNS510, some site say about disconnecting the cars "Compass Module" as the rns510 already has its own??
Apparently it causes a conflict of data bus traffic with both in use?? meaning the car doesnt know where it is???
Have some of you guys had to do this? or just not bothered, have you gone from the standard rcd300 / rcd500 or from the previous MFD2 Sat nav?
-
Yes thats him
To give him a tiny bit of credit i got the replacement unit today as promised before 1.00pm.Its got a couple of tiny marks on it but its a million times better than the other 3.
Also just a quick question he gave me firmware2009 on disc, what improvements does that make on the sat nav unit (its a versionB)?
-
Nice to see you got it sorted sundaydriver the 2009 c version f/w will give you the below improvements
http://www.my-gti.com/1198 (http://www.my-gti.com/1198)
VWjon the uk/euro vw's dont have a compass it is done through the RNS510, the US RNS doesn't have a built in compass and instead has one in the boot.

Mine was from stirlicas13 on ebay. Its from Lithuania, but the guy was very helpful and answered emails straight away. He even gave me £25 back into my PayPal as the unit has a couple of hairline scratches on the shiney plastic bit (which you can't see unless looking for!).
-
Cheers Darren, i did'nt know if i should try it as everything seems to work (displays clilmate controls, steering wheel controls work, displays radio and ipod info on the dash etc)
-
Do you get nav info on the info display?? if not poss that your satnav is not activated in the can gateway.
If the nav isn't activated then when you are routing somewhere you will not get the directions in the white info display or the compass on normal driving.
Darren
-
No i dont get nav info in the info display box, how can i activate that??
-
Needs coding via VAGCOM mate
-
Cheers morty, forgot to mention im getting the RNS510 for a MK5 Gti, but I assume it will be the same. Just go to find a decent one now.
In my search I have come across different HW versions. HW03 with the Version C firmware upgrade WONT take SDHC cards (over 2GB). HW04 with the upgrade will accept SDHC cards (cards up to 32GB). I take it HW11 will accept SDHC cards with firmware version C as well?
(To avoid confusion for anyone, SDHC is a high capacity SD card, stores over the standard 2GB up to 32GB)

I think its anything above HW04 can be updated to a C version which will take the 32bg memory cards.
Anything below HW04 will update the software, but won't accept anything above 2gb.
My HW04 works fine with my SDHC 8gb car - I don't have a 32gb card to test... but I assume it works!!
