Title: Gear linkage? Gear box? Gear linkage cable? HELP

My gear selector has snapped but what has snapped??? When i take the knob off, look down the knob/selector is just loose, swinging foward and backwards with no connection to the gears!!! Theres like a cable/rod that i can pull with my hand and it changes the gears so what ever has snapped it needs to reconnect to that. Can someone please advise me as to what this is and what part i now need!
