As said, which panel filter is best? I would have thought K&N but would just like to here some opinions
How bad does it effect the MPG btw?
-
Rtech recommended me pipercross, so I got one. Comes pre-oiled and is foam not cotton.
-
Doesn't the oil do bad things to the MK4's MAF?

So I heard, but I've had no problems with mine and I've been using it for about 6 months or so.
-
Ive hurd about the oil aswel, thats one of the thigs putting me off pipercross the only other thing is the fast its foam and the K&N is the honey comb effect and wont be as hard to clean with it being solid?
-
Pipercross for me  and you get a nice little whoosh
-
PiperX for me too!
-
I have a pipercross foam filter and find it easy to clean, warm soapy water, rinse, allow to dry then spray that pipercross stuff that makes the dirt stick.
-
I think they are only problematic if you over oil them. Pipercross is next on my list to do. From Reading on here, I think most people would recommend Pipercross.
-
I use a different oil for my filter, an oil that my dad used on his racing endurance bike.
But yes as Stronz said, they only cause problems if you over oil them.
-
what sort of gains do you get from the filter?
-
Thanks guys, think im guna go for the pipercross then
If its cheap enough il order it sometime this week
-
what sort of gains do you get from the filter?
30% more airflow than normal paper filters so it says.
Realistically, I got louder intake sound, better throttle response, more MPG, and better pick up on the revs.

agreed tbh its one of the best things i fitted cant rate enough :afro: also the pipercross filter doesn't need oiling its dry foam according to the box mine came in just requires washing with recommended cleaner, dry and then re-fit

Mine came pre-oiled and it says to re-oil when washed.

piper for me to. had k,n in other cars of mine realy they all do the job ok its what you wont.
-
as some of you know i have the agn - non turbo. I will now get one but in terms of horses what could i expect? and will i get any other of the benfits listed?

as I said, better mpg, better throttle response and better pick up of the revs. HPwise, you wont see too much, maybe 1 or 2hp, but it is constant along the power curve.
-
sounds like a no-brainer!!
-
Just to through another one in the mix,i have a green cotton filter

Not hear much about green filters, but being cotton I assume they are the same as the K&N filters.

Not true you need to spray the pipercross dirt retention fluid on or it wont work as a filter, too much though and it will block the airflow.

ah valid point there

Just to through another one in the mix,i have a green cotton filter
supposed to be a good filter by all accounts  anyone fitted ITG ?
-
Green cotton was the best recommended for the 03- wrx so i got one and certainly done the job !
i was gonna get a kn panel for my aum but there around £50 where as pipercross are around £35 so it maywell be the x for me .

Has everyone who has replacd thier filter also smoothed thier air boxes?
I cant be ar*ed to take it all out and smooth it - can it be done in place by just removing the lid?

smoothing the box is easy!.. but i aint put the r32 intake pipes in so cant comment on them... iv just smoothed my box and put a pipercross in
when are you suppose to clean the pipercross panel filters anyway?? i never got any spray or anything with it as lads from r-tech put it in for me
-
that still doesn't resolve the question - - why piperX is better than K&N or vice versa - what distinguishes one from the other, some technicalities please.
-
I think K&N have the edge because they are not as good at filtering, an air filter as its name suggests has to filter sh*t out of the air without restricting air flow, a contradictory task. K&N I think were developed for racing cars running in fairly clean air where as piperx were developed for motorbikes especially motx and rally cars where the air is dirty. What is more important to you, a longer engine life (piperx) or slightly better air flow and performance (K&N) unless you are in a dusty area K&N should be fine.
-
k&n are good i dont like pipercross ,just what i think......
