have posted in mk4, but no joy...
I recently helped a mate buy a lovely mk4 1.6 16v.
However he is complaining the gear change form 1st to 2nd is a bit sticky and I wondered if this was a common problem?
Maybe a change of gearbox oil would help?
thanks in advance.

anyone?

Sorry mate can't offer any real info but a change of oil might help, how many miles has it done ?.Might be worth taking it to a garage & getting it on a ramp & look at the linkage ?.

93,000, yeah that sounds like a good plan. thanks.

The MK4 boys are normaly quite good. I know the 1.4 gearboxes in the MK4 are useless and are well known for failing, I'm not sure if the 1.6 uses the same. At guessed I'd have thought so but that's just a guess.

its the 16v, so hopefully better!

The 1.4 also came with 16v :undecided:

The first thing to check should be the linkage. Make sure the crank arm on the top of the box hasn't slipped - even a tiny misalignment will cause issues.
Oil change is highly recommended as well though.
