Title: 1st to 2nd is a bit sticky

hi guys,

I'm venturing out of the Mk5 section, so treat me nicely.

I recently helped a mate buy a lovely mk4 1.6 16v.

However he is complaining the gear change form 1st to 2nd is a bit sticky and I wondered if this was a common problem? 

Maybe a change of gearbox oil would help?

Screwdriver on top of the gearbox? That was my problem!

1.6 gearboxes are renowned to failing unfortunately

I'd try changing the oil and get the linkage looked at and go from there
