Title: Do I HAVE to renew the airbag bolts after removin them?
Post by: Khare on 07 October 2009, 20:25
as title. I need to remove my steering wheel, and reading the haynes it says I have to renew the bolts after removal. Do I HAVE to or can I just re-use them?

Dont believe all you read in Haynes!

Like undo this and it will pull right out! Yea right! Found many times that what they say is the easiest bit becomes the hardest.
But then they work on brand new cars that have not seen a road! So no corrosion etc.

I wonder why they say this? Hope it has nothing to do with the function when the airbags go off.

If someone wants to test theirs I'll be up for a watch.

I would guess so but airbags should be replaced every 10 years anyway so what difference is a couple of bolts going to make we are not talking 5 star n cap rating at the end of the day.

While we are on the subject (excuse the hijack please ) how long do you leave the battery disconnected to avoid it blowing up in your face so to speak?

At least 10mins

I'd say 10mins, then hold brake pedal for 30 secs and even go as far as touching the terminals (not on the battery, on the car with no battery) together so you get every bit out if you want to be 100%.

It's better to disconnect the battery, but the other day when I had to take off my Polo steering wheel to adjust the spinwheel, my mate quite happily went to town on the wheel with a screwdriver with the battery connected, I said "feck off am I doing that, you can do it then if the battery isn't disconnected" but needless to say he really gave it some bangs with the battery to connected and nothing went wrong. But to be on the safe side you still should.

Think its just Haynes being cautious with bolts that dont get undone very often. They say it about so many! Only ones I would definitely change is head bolts.

I did mine about 6 years ago so bit late to come watch!

Haha yeah when I removed my airbag I never disconnected the battery because I'd literally just tuned my head unit to give out the best sound and didn't wanna have to do it all over again!

Although I was crapping myself so I sat outside the car while I undone the bolts lol

I think the bolts have loctite on them from new. I've never bothered re-coating the bolts when re-using them.
