Machine shop just rang me, i dropped my head off (1.8 8v PB) there to get the guides and seats done, they say the vlaves i have given them dont fit the head...
I brought brand new valves from Euro car parts, part number 308 44 0431
Spec says 38.1mm valve diameter
Definitly the right one for my engine as it says compatible for PB
However comparing them to the valves i took out they are about 1mm smaller all the way around in diameter
There is a what looks like a part number on the top of the valve i took out.....L - C26 601C
Is it possible the previous owner has uprated to bigger valves or have i been mugged and its not even a PB head (I really dont have a clue when it comes to engine nitty gritty!)
If so does anyone know where I can get these valves from or shall I just re-use the ones I got (was going to soak the head in diesal when i got it back anyway...can i put these in too?)
Cheers

Stock PB inlet valves are 40mm diameter, all earlier engines use 38mm ones so ECP have sold you the wrong parts.

Soak the head in diesel? I thought diesel in a petrol engine caused carnage or is it the other way around?
If you need 4 valves we might have stock at work. let me check tomorrow!

Diesel makes a pretty good parts washer solution from what I can gather. Its just a light oil so theres nothing in the engine its self it can damage.
The whole wrong fuel thing is all about damaging the fuelling system cannot think how an engine can be hurt either way. Petrol is bad in a diesel car because it rots the seals and doesn't provide lubrication from what I understand.

So even though it includes my date and engine code on their website its their fault?....Just want to make sure so when I phone up again (the second mistake they have made on the one order!!) I can be sure that they are the ones in the wrong not me!
These are the ones i got..... http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1990/p/Car-Parts/Engine-Parts/Engine-Parts/Cam-and-Valve-Train/?308440431&1&07c7ea0b763f77391c1fba3436b0a9f8296243e1 (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1990/p/Car-Parts/Engine-Parts/Engine-Parts/Cam-and-Valve-Train/?308440431&1&07c7ea0b763f77391c1fba3436b0a9f8296243e1)
Cheers for all your help guys (again  )

those are for a 1.6 (and I think 1.8 driver) head. 38mm inlet (i think 36mm exhaust). GTI has 40mm inlet and 38mm exhaust as said before, so yeah, deffo the wrong valve size was given to you.
-
ok cheers for clearing that up....proper annoying because it says its for the 8v gti, PB engine...spent ages making sure I had narrowed it down to the right ones!
Well...least it isnt my fault!
Thank you
-
maybe the earlier 8v engines (not sure if the engine code was PB) had smaller valves, same as the other 8v engines.
-
carb engines had 38mm valves. gti's are all 40mm iirc
-
Its even in the haynes book of lies, PB and PF use 40mm inlets, all other 1.6 and 1.8 8 valves use 38mm.

+1 I am sure thats right.

ECP selling the wrong parts... well I'm so surprised!!
Feel for you there, they have fooked me about so many times now I'm never going back to them
-
My first order with them and not impressed! they dont stock the ones i need so have to send the others back....postage at my cost of course. hhhmmmm
-
ummm it appears they have a broken parts muppet. may i suggest the use of a large stick on said muppet
-
Now have the problem that I can't find inlet valves in stock anywhere...GSF were out hence why I brought from ECP...AVS dont do them and vagcat says they're about £20 each from VW (bit steep for my budget) .....any body know where they might be hiding some?

prod beavis at veew serices with a stick he'll be abel to find some.
