Title: Vagcom??????
Post by: Deano2711 on 06 October 2009, 23:07
Hi Everyone

I am fairly new to the Golf scene and have been reading about Vagcom on here quite a bit. I know nothing about Vagcom and from what I can gather it reads the fault codes and resets service codes etc. After looking on fleabay I have seen one which I am thinking of buying. Is this what I need or is it no good to me??  I drive a 1997 8v GTi by the way.
Also don't know how to paste a link to item so the item number is190329451002

Thanks for your help

Deano

Hi Mate

Yes that cable looks to be what you need. I haven't got that one exactly, so if you truly want to be sure then get the one i got. It comes with the software too so you don't have to faff about on the web.

Yeah its easy enough. It can do far more complex things too if you really wanted to. Various info on thr forums and web so not too difficult to find out how to do stuff. The Ross Tech website is helpful.

Sorry to hijack your thread mate, but just looking at that ebay link and it says it doesn't work with the MK5 Golf... anyone got a link for a ebay one that is good, and also works with the mk 5?

MK5 uses the newer version of the software and a different spec cable. Go to the Ross Tech website and see which version you need, then you gave options of Ross Tech cable or ebay version.

This was a handy thread - just ordered this myself (Exact one from this link) for my 8v GTi as my ABS and Airbag lights are on so hopefully I can sort these out but quick question. Where do I plug it in?
I know in Vauxhalls it's near the handbrake but where is it in the golf?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the ashtray. Then on the left, there is a plastic cover that will slide to the right. This will reveal the plug.

Just removed the front ashtray from mine and there is no panel that moves/slides to reveal a plug. Is there a different place to look. Mine is a 1997 model if this helps. Or if anyone has pics??     Cheers     Deano

Next to the ashtray is the cigarette lighter which does not come out. When I was having a look and pulling panels (gently) the dash frontage was moving so have not found a removable part yet.  HELP!!!!!!lol     Deano

I have hit the test button but keeps saying interface not found!!!!  Can anyone help as it's bloody freezing in this car!!!   Does the ignition or engine need to be on or something???     Cheers     Deano

Already tried that Mate but I only have 1 port on my laptop. It just doesn't seem to be found on the laptop. I will try the works laptop and let you know. Should take about ten minutes.     Cheers     Deano

You have to select the correct COM port in settings. When you attach the cable to the PC, look in device manager for it, it will say which com port it's assigned. Select this as the Com port in the Vag Com settings. Then plug into the car (no need to start, just turn key to position 2). It should then run that initial setup. Then click 'Save'. So you only do it this once.

Check out the Ross Tech website, or do a search here. The info is there, it's easy enough.

Have now managed to connect the laptop to the Golf and performed and saved the test results as prompted. How do I now go about performing tests on the car etc. Do I need a serial number from Ross Tech or something??  I know very little about computers!!!!!!!!!  Can anyone shed any light??     Cheers     Deano

Got mine through this morning but having a laptop with Vista all it does is crash even running in administrator mode. Awsome managed to find that there is a problem with the airbag but now I can't do anything with it as every button I press causes it to crash.

Any Ideas people?

Thanks...
