So, no one knows antthing about removing a engine Tranny from a MK2 16v GTI ???? No suggestions, advice? From the experienced? Or is it that i'm a Yank....? I'll ask the question this way.. CAN THE ENGINE & TRANSMISSION BE REMOVED TOGETHER???? And if so, any suggestions......?????

Yes engine and gearbox can be removed together and out the top is the easist way.

way i do it is to take all the front end off except the front engine/radiator carrier, then hook the crane up to it. undo the top nut on the front engine mount and jack it up till the engine lifts away from the mount. Then remocve the front engine/rad carrier, and the rest of the engine mount bolts. lift and pull engine out the front.
need to undo the driveshafts 1st obv, the way I do this is to jack up each side and get a helper to hold the wheel while I crack off each bolt. you need a special spline tool for this so make sure you get one before you start. clean out the bolt heads well otherwise you'll round them out.
I find it easier to remove the exhaust manifold from the engine, but you can leave it on and disconnect the downpipe from the front silencer/CAT, then drag it all out together.

Not a 16v - but I removed/installed my 8v in about the same way RJ described:
