Title: rns510 trick
Post by: njc850 on 06 October 2009, 21:56
I found this clip, whilst researching the RNS, thought it may be of some comedy value/ use to people who sit in traffic jams a lot!
Certainly beats paying 30 odd quid for an ebay gadget
Any idea what the film is?

You would need to be quick to turn it off if stopped by the Police. These days they will even pull you over if they spot you eating or drinking anything while driving.

I take it you have never encountered Strathclyde Police.

Didn't do me for anything. But know a few guys in the force and some of the stories they told me, of what they get up to when bored, would amaze you.

undue car and attention

That's what I thought, but they would have to prove it which is difficult. Unless like I said above, you were driving like a t1t.

Can you give me a quick list of all the 'extras' I'd need to get it going? Shark fin, software updates, etc. Did you fit it yourself?

TIA

How can you tell what firmware version you have?

On some units you can hold down the setup button for about 10 seconds and it gives you a hidden menu that tells you about version info etc.  If you want to check if you have the latest version, the easiest thing to do is try putting in an SD card that is MORE than 2gb.  The latest FW is the only one that will accept anything greater than 2gb.

Other than that - the sticker on the back of the unit tells you its original version.

[quote author FroGTI]
The required bits are the GPS Antena and the VW Code Card.  Optional extras are the V5 Map Disk, and the latest Firmware (probably required for the climate control to work), and a shot of a VagCom to get it coded to your MFD / steering controls.

Judging by this... fitting should take you about 10 mins - even if you don't know the first thing about car audio!

Version info

Version A:

the most obvious is the volume level when altered comes up in the middle of the screen and the back ground dims,  Also go into the Tones  settings and select balance and fade if you have 2 rows front to back left to right then this is version A

Version B:

The above volume indication is down the bottom of the screen and the screen doesn't dim any more you will also get a different balance screen which shows you a top view of a Golf GTI/R32 interior and you have a scroll feature

Version C:

As above posted stick a SD card in that is more than 2gb also in all of the screens goto EXTRAS at the bottom of the screen and in there will be an option to turn the screen off also in MAP settings there is an option for visual speed limitations this will show you the speed limit of the road your currently on.

Just to clarify, all these versions are just firmware updates, no hardware changes ?

yep

After HW04 on Revision A, all the hardware is the same.  I believe that pre HW04 is different, as the 32gb cards won't work in them - even with the latest FW.

Who what what ? When buying the RNS510, how do I check its not HW04 ?

It will say at the side of the part number on the sticker,  the sticker if not scratched off is on the top of the unit.

You can get a B or a C version - without any problems.  If you get an A version, you want one thats either HW04 or above.
As morty said above - the only thing that tells you the HW version is the sticker on the top of the unit.  I would email the seller and ask if you're buying from eBay if you happen to stumble across an A unit.
Mine is an A HW04 and is fine - and I think the majority of A's on the go are at least HW04 though.
