hi all
sorry Mot to be able to search and ask you all but im out with the car.
Mot on thursday
i just put a finger through my front sill Jacking point
question is how much for welding and how big a job :(
cheers all :)
-
Hi Mate I had the same problem in August and I paid £30 for it to be welded and this took a couple of hours with other job so should be about an hours labour tops. Cheers Deano
-
if your right im gonna come round and kiss you.
i was thinking hundreds!
cheers mate :D
-
Good Luck with it mate. Mine was my mate doing the MOT but the guy who welded it I had never met before. PLEASE PLEASE don't try to kiss me but if I can help any more just ask. lol!!!!! Cheers Deano
-
Deano I think that is a very, very cheap price!
How much were the cills?
Or did you just have a patch welded over?
-
That'll be a patch price but there's nothing wrong with a patch if it's done right.

I would think you will be paying more than £30 to be honest, you should really cut out and weld in as required.
-
I didnt think you were allowed patches on cills?
-
Yup they're allowed as long as they're seam welded not just tacked on. To do it properly all rust should be cut out, and the patch welded in correctly. I've patched mini sills on many many occaions.

Hmmmm shame I will have to replace mine completely then!
-
thanks all!!
well i told my mechanic and he's doing a few jobs on thursday to it anyway so he will have a gander whilst he's at it!!
fingers crossed!!
they are about 10cm square near the jacking point and further up the sill...
so how much is a whole new sill, well 2 new sills, lol
bloody hell i hope im not gonna end up with a massive bill :(
your sills not too good then len...?
-
Mine have been bUggered by careless jacking! Not by me I hasten to add.
So the bottom flange has been pushed in and the sills squashed.
Not good.
Have a look on Eurocarparts for a price on the sills.
-
The joys of side skirts lol.. hides things like this
-
lol, thats what i thought, then went poking around!!
my jacking points have been mashed previously too!!
they arent the best example in the world!! :D
-
anyone used euro repair panels, anygood?? + could find sills on their site, roughly how much are they or where else should i look for replacements. Mine are pretty deformed from past idiots+ was considering replacing as i weld, maybe just patch but if the whole sills are cheap may as well do the whole lot.
-
Get it patched whatever so the rust is gone, and get sill covers, Focus' and stuff pass with rusty sill because they have plastic sill covers.

ive just been looking and cant seem to find the sills on there, lol
im just waiting to see if anyone has had theirs done recently and how much it cost them?!
-
feb this year had to get both mine done :( was £90 so not too bad....just hope its been a decent fix!
-
was that a patch or new sills??
thanks for saying though :)
-
Mine had a hole about three inch wide after the jack was put on incorrectly by the previous owner. My guy in the garage cut away about a foot and welded a patch on properly. Then went back to the MOT bay for retest and pass!!!! Only a patch but more than good enough for MOT. The rest of the sills are pretty solid but am going to invest in a trolley jack to prevent further damage. Cheers Deano
-
Most of the damage on mine was done by trolley jacks! So just be careful when you place them. I now use a good hefty bit of cardboard on top of the jack cup.
-
ive got a lump of old tractor tyre
-
I never jack a car on the sills, I always use the subframe or rear beam.
-
Not possible with a lowered car!

It is if you drive up onto a plank of wood 1st.
-
No room in garage to do that!

No room in garage to do that!
I have never been lucky enough to have a garage.

I normally jack mine up on the back of the wishbones, if im just doing something where i dont want axle stands, if not then i do as wayne says and then put the axel stands at the back of the wishbones on the humped reinforced bits.
I have to use 2 bits of wood even if i wanted to get the sills! Mine are bent a bit but no rusted thankfully, so i have unsealed them like a mother :P
-
will have to try the wood trick...
it was a mare doing my oil yesterday...
had to use the normal jack to lift the car a bit then let the trolley jack get under to lift from there!
even then i couldnt lift it that far cos the front splitter wouldnt let the bar move, lol...
who says lowering your car aint practical :D
-
Yea very practical!
I have 2 trolley jacks, one a naff Halfords one and the other a Machine Mart 2 tonne like they use in tyre places.
I just use those together until I can get the big one under the subframe or bottom wishbone.

I've got some pastic ramps that I bought for getting the camper level in fields. Ideal for getting the car an extra 4" off the ground for a quick shuftie underneath.
Neithe rof mine are too low for the trolly jack but the old passat was and I used to use the plastic ramps to get it up a bit then whip the jack under for full elevation.
