my gti 8v mk3 clutch is slipping slightly , is there owt to check or is it basiclly a new clutch , can i adjust it or is it a self adjusting one , car is a r reg. :embarassed:

Hi Shogun Check out the clutch cable first. It is self adjusting but I believe that if you reconnect the whit plastic clip onto the catches near the clutch then unclip it and pump the pedal a few times this should adjust it up. If it is better after this I would change the cable next. Cost me £30 for my cable (think I was ripped off) which is easy enough to change yourself. Hope this helps Cheers Deano

where is the clip , ontop of the gearbox??

Follow the clutch cable from the pedal. Where the cable meets the arm on the clutch. About six inches before it reaches the clutch there is a white plastic clip that when clipped on extends the clutch cable. I will have a look for a picture for you. Cheers Deano

Hi Mate Found a picture on here. I have marked the clip you want with the two white arrows. Hope this helps Cheers Deano

I would try a new cable first, not mega bucks and may make a difference but if it is 100% slipping then really it needs replacing asap.

With mine I had no problems until I noticed that my cable was almost dead. I changed the cable then started to get the clutch slipping. As Wayne said I then ended up changing the clutch. I just thought checking the cable first would be easier, if the cable has worn and stretched then replacing may help or may not. But if you have a new clutch fitted it is recommended to change the cable anyway. Cheers Deano

"Cost me £30 for my cable (think I was ripped off)" Mine cost £49 +vat, so I think I got ripped off more :P Told there was 2 types, and mine was the more expensive :/ Doesn't have the white rossed clip on tho.

The clip is mainly for fitting purposes only. It extends the cable to allow you to fit it into the arm easier. But can also be used for adjusting if needs be. Thought mine was expensive at 30 quid but 49 sounds expensive?? Cheers Deano

ive found the clip you mean and it was already clipped off , when i put it back on there was hardly any pedal at all i could push the pedal right down before i could feel it , so do you think it could want a new cable??
-
When the clip is replaced the cable is longer to allow it to be fitted easily. You now have to remove the clip again and pump the clutch pedal a few times. Then test the car to see if clutch is still slipping. If it is still slipping you are looking at a new clutch and then a new cable is advised. Good Luck Deano

Yes sounds like it, when you fit the new one don't remove the clip untill after you have it connected up.
