Title: Big GTI's little sister: the R-Line
Post by: Fred_du_94 on 04 October 2009, 20:52
Hi Guys,

This post might be not relevant to the GTI forum, but just for the record, the MK6 R-Line is set to make its appearance this autumn.
I have collected a few pix and posted them there

Great way to ruin the 'R branding on the Scirocco R and Golf R!
Give people the same interiors and parts at half the price.
Just like BMW with their M Sports, and Audi's S-Line.
My g/f drives a BMW 120i M sport - which has M badges on everything... but would struggle to beat my Smart Car in a straight line!!

Those front splitters are perfect - just what I was looking for. The kick plates in the doors are in a daft position, though.

Yeah i like that!

I take it it'll use the GT 170 BHP engine.

+1.

Loving the wheels, although the really look too similar to the R's alloys, IMO.

By the way, the missus'  'M' sport 1-series has 118bhp, FFS. Mmmm, sporty!  :afro:

I have to agree with the comment on why?

If you want a sporty model buy a sporty model, ie the GTi which is cheap to run, or the real R if you want the go and looks and can afford it.

It doesn't make sense to me, I mean look at the logo's on the seats, then look at the Roc R and Golf R normal seats, and you can't then justify the extra cash that VW want for the Real R models.

Why do car makers now adays feel they have to make a niche model for everyone and everyones budgets?

We probably won't see the Golf R-Line here - VWUK never brought the Mk5 R-Line here and have only recently introduced the Passat and Tiguan R-Line models, mostly to try and encourage some sales.

It would probably confuse the general public too much (with the GTI/GTD/R) and anyway, most UK buyers after a new mid-range model wouldn't be prepared to pay the premium for the R-Line package. In fact most UK buyers after a new VW don't understand the concept of a visually upgraded car. That's for the style-conscious Audi demographic and people like us who go for the GTI/R.

I think VW UK already import a Passat R line which is a dressed up base model so don't be overly surprised if they do bring in the Golf version. Would probably make more sense in the UK to badge it as a Golf Driver to carry on the heritage but I think that's unlikely.
It looks quite smart and would be popular with youngsters who can't afford the insurance on GT, GTI & GTD models.

Very good idea!
