Title: Loss of power - Golf GTI Mk2 1.8 8v

Hi there people,i have been told this forum is excellent for anything to do with Golfs.

I have recently purchased a Golf Gti Mk2, its a 8v in blue, i will post some pictures of it tomorrow when the weather is better and i can get some good pics.

I need some help as i am having some intermitent problems - basically my golf from time to time seems to be losing power and then turning off. The car was serviced three weeks ago, also the distributor has been replaced and also the throttle valve but the car is still cutting out.
Also the oil light will tend to come on just as the car loses power.
The strange thing is the car runs fine and then within a few seconds loses power and turns off, straight away i will start the car and it will run fine with no problems at all.

Its has been suggeted that it may be a water pump, a fuel pump or even a problem with the clutch.

Can somebody please help and give me some suggetions as im a bit stuck now and really dont want to sell the car because of this problem but i may have no choice!!

Check all earthing points.

earth on the rocker cover near gearbox. one on the gearbox bracket, they go to a earth point just behind the battery and then of course to the battery.

hi have just had similar problem. mine was slower sometimes and not others and cut out at junctions. turned out to be afm and isv soted now much better

probably sounds silly!! but what do you mean by afm and isv...???

afm is the air flow meter attached to the air box. and isv is the idle stabalisation valve on top of the cam cover with a two pin plug and two pipes on it. before you go changing bits i would suggest rubjonnys digi tune guide makes a bucket load of difference if your not set up right  :grin:

check that stupid rubber gromit for the oil breather on the rocker cover aswell, ive nailed 3 so far
