I thought that was an easy one to answer - Monza Shadow, until I saw a BLACK GTI with the standard wheels and they looked damn fine!
Mulling over getting a WHITE GTI with the Monza Shadow which I think work great together - white paint and black wheels contrast brilliantly!
But then I have seen videos of RED GTIs and I think they look better with standard wheels!!!
Hmmm, looks like the choice of alloy comes down to which bodywork colour I choose.

I know from experience the answer in here will be 99% to the monza shadows.
The problem i have with the monza shadows is due to there design been a polished/lac finish they can get whats called white worm as the lac lifts due to weather and temp differences, or stone damage, marking due to kerb etc etc, This gradually lifts the lac.
Quite a few people suffer this badly in the mk5s with the monza II's. this corrosion is covered by warrenty but if your happy keep getting them replaced every 2 years or getting them referbed after that then fine i just could not put up with the hassle AGAIN of keep getting it done. Give me a painted or powder coated wheel anyday over the hassle and looks of a polished/lac wheel.

I guess it comes down to looks+hassle or function.

I know most people here prefer the Monza Shadows, but hey!
I just don't get off that much on looking at my car's wheels
I can't see them at all when I'm driving it
Neither can anybody else, as they're going round
The whole white worm thing
It's not a performance issue - the 17s are every bit as fast
The 17s allegedly give a slightly smoother ride
Are they worth an extra £400 or so?
Only you can say, but I repeat, I just don't get off that much on looking at my car's wheels while it's sitting in my driveway.

17" are faster

Those wheels look awfull, that is never down to fair wear and tear,i`ve seen loads of older golfs with monza`s on and none look anywhere near that bad :undecided:

I think the GTI needs 18" wheels, but I dislike the Monza Shadows so much that, TBH, if they were the only two wheel models available, I would go with the standard 17" Monzas. I solved the problem by putting 18" Interlagos wheels on mine.

True if you live in the city in the south. The reason you have not seen many imo will be because owners have had them replaced under warrenty or referbed it happens regular, but if you don't believe me so be it. Just don't start  on forums when it happens. Mine were nearly as bad as those in that photo (That photo is of RedRobins Monza IIs). Once you get a little mark or for example stone chip it spreads like weeds. It happens with every make of this type of finish to alloy wheels.
have a look around on the forums for lots of posts about it. One example (that i remember were it is)link (http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-gti-forum/112670-how-many-have-been-sucessful-monza-ii-white-worm-warranty-claims.html)

You can keep wheels with this machined/laquered finish looking good for 4 or 5 years but you have to wash them every week, treat them with wax, touch in any stone chips when they occur, swap to winter wheels when the roads are being gritted, etc. Very time consuming and not always practical. Even then, they'll corrode eventually.
I'd still buy the 18's and when they do go have them stripped and refinished in silver, like the 17's. The recesses can still be painted in black or grey if you want and they'll last a lot longer.
Or, as FroGTI says, invest in some decent alternative wheels.
I wonder what VW do with all the old corroded wheels supposedly returned under warranty?

Well i hope it don`t happen to mine, but you can rest assured i won`t be crying on a forum about it if it does  ,suppose the moral is check them before the WARRANTY expires

Well, according to one refubisher I spoke to when I had my mk5 they refurb them and shove 'em back into stock for warranty exchanges.

I just don't get off that much on looking at my car's wheels - really? get the 18's and you will
I can't see them at all when I'm driving it - but you know people will be thinking "such a shame they didn't get the 18s"
Neither can anybody else, as they're going round - that is utter rubbish - trip to specsavers for you me thinks
The whole white worm thing - had 18s on my mk5 gti and had the car for nearly 3 years - not one sign of white worm
It's not a performance issue - the 17s are every bit as fast - yes, they are supposed to be faster (but what's 0.1 of a sec?)
The 17s allegedly give a slightly smoother ride - agreed, but who cares

worth £400? every day of the week

I agree eveyone says how nice the shadows are on my car, from a 12 year old paper boys to 65 year old dog walkers,i`ve lost count of the amount of people who say how smart they are.

My car came with 17 inch Monzas, and it looked plain as hell. I wanted one with 17s as I had a set of 18inch BBSs to go on the car already. However now I wish I'd sold the BBSs and got one with Monza Shadows instead! Too many people critisise them from just looking at photos, they look lovely in the flesh where as the 17'' Monzas just look plain.
I can understand peoples reservations about them, and their worries too as I was on the sharp end of a set of Monza IIs that needed refurbing on my mk5, but when the sunlight glints off of them there's just no comparason.
The wheelarches on the mk6 must also be a slightly different shape to the mk5s as wheels do look smaller on the mk6. There's a guy in work with a 3 door GT model that has 18s on but they look quite small. When I first saw it I had to go over and check the tyre size to make sure. You would never mistake a mk5 with 18s on.

I have the 18" Monza Shadows on mine... and I must say it looks gorgeous... Since this is my first GTI, I have had no experience with the white worms or that sort of thing but here in the Netherlands, I have noticed the white worm attacks all sorts of alloy wheels and not just the Monzas... So in my opinion, it is how one looks after your rims rather then blaming the Monzas... I try to wash my car once a week but the Dutch have equally crap weather as you folks in England... ha ha ha... I think what's the critical time would be winter when salts are being used... I think thats the No.1 cause of white worms...
-
Yeah, it's far from just the Monzas. A lot of VW rims have a polished lip and also the shiny bit in the VW centre caps which suffer just as badly as the Monza IIs. It's just more obvious I guess with the Monza IIs as the shiny area is much larger. Plus it tends to be enthusiasts who own GTIs rather than the company car drivers of other models who don't give a toss about its appearance or resale value.
-
Am just about to put these on My Edition 30, and they shouldnt white worm........ fingers crossed

Cant beat Monza II's for keeping clean very easy compared to BBS Pescara's.

Ah, I'm guessing Greenouse's wheels? I love 'em!
-
I like those wheels! I want!!! Hmmm I wonder where I can get my wheels powder coated black here in the Netherlands...

Correct , collecting next weekend, and hopefully will suit mine.

the black looks very smart. the ickle cute red line around the outside is a nice touch, would compliment the red line on the front grill of a Mk5 or Mk6 I think
you know I always wondered if you're putting tyres on (well actually I wouldn't know cos I've never done it before and probably not likely to) if you're balancing the wheel to make sure it doesn't wobble around everywhere, where do the wheel-weights go? do they go on the back or something? or does it not need them somehow? reason i wonder is all other wheels i've seen there is the little rim that pokes out a bit and i think that is where the little weight clips on, but no such thing on these Monzas. :undecided:

You need to ask the tyre fitter to use weights that are stuck on. These get placed on the back of the wheel that will not be visible.

They get stuck on to the rear of the alloy wheels.
Its not just Monzas, that goes for all alloy wheels.

on my current car that has alloys they are just on the [visible] outside of the wheel, although the original ones that came with the car were kind of tiny electrical fuse size weights (less noticeable), but when i had the front tyres changed, the tyre fitter used some what appear to be standard-ish plastic ones or something which are are a bit thinner but wider. i guess i wasn't too bothered that the weights were visible on my cheapo runaround, i guess the tyre dude might do it on purpose to show the customers they have actually balanced the wheel. on nicer alloys like the Monzas, it would certainly ruin the beautiful lines
