Title: Steering lock and ignition barrel question
Post by: baronvontinkle on 03 October 2009, 14:32
Hi there,

I'm just in the middle of replacing all my locks and consequently my steering lock. I've hit abit of a problem however. I cant seem to get the old steering lock off and the haynes manual really isnt making any sense to me.

Where do I go from here? I tried turning off what seems to be a nut above the spring but that just turns the wheels of the car.

Thanks for any help,
Rich

that big bit you think is a nut needs to come off its not a nut but you will need to use a gear puller to get it off its well jammed on.

i found it was best to take the whole column out and work with it on the bench rather than messing about in the car.

There are a few threads on this so no doubt this one will get locked however I have just done this on my car. I removed the spline adapter (the cone shaped thing that the wheel sits on) by fastening mole grips onto it tightly then pulling with a hub puller with the legs holding onto the mole grips. An allen bolt holds the lock casting on then you can do the drill thing as per haynes manual. Drilling never worked for me mind so I ended up replacing the casting.

before you get giddy with the beating device put nut back on and place a block of wood on end then beat it

MC hammer + MJ = winning combo. Works as well.

you might be able to leave all of that attached, to remove the ignition lock you need to drill a small hole in the steering lock housing.  If you can get the drill in the right spot you wont need to touch the spline adaptor.  In fact, you might find the hole is already there as it looks to be an original lock housing with an aftermarket lock.

Take off the upper plastic trim and have a look!  If there is no hole, you need a 3mm drill bit and drill as follows:
