Just realised i have the larger brakes 288mm on my 8v gti, found this out as i couldnt get my alloys to fit, caliper was in the way, lookily i have the 10mm spacers required to fit them over the larger brakes, so i just need longer bolts.
Is this common to have the larger brake disks on a P Reg 8v GTI? Or was it because they only had these in stock during production, so mine got the big brake set up.
All good tho, bigger brakes, better braking

Pretty sure that VW fitted 288mm brakes to Mk3 GTI's from '96 onwards. At least that's what Mikester told me
-
ohh cool...
right whats the standard wheel bolt size?
As i need 10mm spacers on the front for my rims and i will need 10 new (longer bolts)
for eg. say the bolt size was 10mm.... i will need 20mm bolts
wheres the best place to buy them. Urgently needed for 2moro. and r they expensive?
Thanks.
-
anyone??
-
I'm also after longer longer bolts so yeah, anyone?

Spot, 1996 on they had the bigger brakes.
Ebay is your best bet for bolts however 10mm is a big spacer, what wheels are they, standard 15" alloys clear ok and I was running 17"s as well with no clearance issues.
-
Right...
They are Azev A Rims. (didnt wanna say this until i got them on lol) Not sure of the offset. but they are 7.5J 17" Tyres are 205,40,17's.
I cant get the wheel to sit on the hub because of the big caliper.
Thanks.
Do you know what size bolts i need running the 10mm spacers i got with the rims that Will clear the caliper...
Asap.

I would check the offset, my 17"s were a offset of 35 and cleared the brakes all ok, something does not sound right to me.

where will i find the offset?

where will i find the offset?
Should be stamped on the back of the wheel or under the center cap, will start ET
-
Try around your motor factors mate, we have Autobitz over here (not sure if they're national), they do long bolts, locking ones have to be special order.

got sum bolts from a alloy wheel shop.... got one on the front now, but it started raining lol. have to wait for the rest.
they do stick out a little bit. but dont think it will be a problem. If i look above the plastic arch the wheels are pretty flush with them. so will that be ok?

Couple of points, 1) should be square taper alloy bolts for those wheels, 2) does not sound good it being flush with the arch my guess is they will rub big time going over bumps etc.
-
:undecided:
Its not lowered yet. and if i do it'l only be 30-40 mm.. if i ever get any more coin.
Rub on what? wheel arch?
at the mo, theres loadsa clearance coz its not lowered.

Wheels are on, except one (has a slow puncture) hopefully its just a reseal job. The rear wheels fit nicely without speacer. but I had to put 10mm spacers (sent with the wheels) to fit due not been able to locate them due to the caliper. Probably because i have the 288 discs. Anyway looks really nice now. Took it for a spin and no problems, no catching, rubbing or anything. I'll get sum pics up later today or tomorrow.

mmm i love a 4x4 mk3 on 17's without being lowerd  nice looking wheels though
-
lol cheers they are nice. I'll get sum picks up soon. and its not that wide. well...
Looks much better than it did before tho.

I am still not sure why you need 10mm spacers with your wheels, I ran 17"s with no issues.

I dunno... The back wheels go on fine, without any problems and look like the offset is very similar to my standard gti rims. but the fronts just would not locate on the hub due to the caliper been in the way of the Spokes on the azev rims. So i used the 10mm spacers that were sent with them and its fine now. just looks bit wide at the front. thinking of putting 5mm spacers on the rear to make it look normal lol.
I'll post some pics tomorrow. Looks nice tho, could do with about 30mm lower tho, (all in time) no rubbing issues anyway.

quick question....
On Azev A Rims....
Mine dont have much of a Deep Dish at all so what does that indicate the offset being?
As i've seen some on ebay and they have a Deep Dish indicating a different offset...
As said... Mine Do not have much of a deep dish at all.... would that indicate a Low OffseT? Hense why i needed the spacers on the Front.????

Sit it on its arse :)

lol cant go too low, as my rims are flush with the arches lol. so would be a nightmare for scrubbage lol

That suggests to me the wheels are wrong.

EXACT same trouble Im having.

theres several diffent width A's the 8" ones having more dish, sounds like they arent going to fit well. personally i would sell them and get a differnt set
-
all i can find on the wheels are markings.... 7 1/2 J (7.5j), H2. And thats about it. Doesnt say anything on the inside of the rim about what the Offset is... Has a number 10 and a number 30 on them, but no ET number.
Thing is, i like the look of them  There not rubbing/catching anything. and it doesnt look tooo bad at all with the standard shocks/springs i have. I'll take some pics tomorrow if i get chance. Has a Euro Style look 2 it.

They may not be rubbing or catching now but if you wanted to lower it then soon will.
-
To be honest dont think i will get it lowered now, cant afford to spend tooo much on me golf at the mo / or in the near future, coz i'm saving for a house
So as it looks right now, im pretty happy with it. Pics will follow either today or tomorrow.
Plus i like the wheels. suits the car great.

quick question, are the 288 calipers different from the 280s?? i presume they are

Yes and the disc offset is different.

Well i'm not happy. only tested the wheels on the car for bout 1 hour, couldnt drive it as one of them needs a tyre resealing.
Took them off and put my original gti's on, as having a good look at them in the light, theres been some damage repair done on them and its a proper bodge job, over spray on them. plus the tyres on them wont pass the MOT either. me mate had a look at them with me and he was NOT impressed. Its a bluddy good job i have NOT payed for them yet. I'm sending them back. Cant believe it. Why some people would falsely advertise something to get rid of it. Well there getting them back. Proper PISSED OFF!!!! Just glad i found out about them before i put me car in for the retest, otherwise it would have failed and i would have had to fork out on MORE tyres and another 40quid MOT Fee. I'm even more mad, as my partner is screaming at me bout them. f**k sake.
Sorry bout the language. but i am not happy.

New or s/h

S/h. But not as described, was told they would pass MOT. Yeah right o.

Sorry but i have to reply to this thread. You were told these wheels were NOT perfect and would need a refurb and that 2 of the tyres had scrapping on walls of the tyres!! And that one had a slow puncture.
Despite that you agreed to buy them from me. I paid for these to be sent to you WITHOUT getting a penny from you. I also told you that i had to use spacer on the front due to the calipers so you really should have double checked your own car for any problems. I DID NOT TELL YOU THEY WOULD PASS AN MOT....IM NOT A MECHANIC!!!
I dont like to be made out to try and rip you off, i ran the wheels on my car for 3-4 weeks without any problems. You agreed to buy a s/h set of alloys and thats what i sent you by a courior paid by myself.
If i had anything to hide why would i send you the wheels BEFORE you have gave me a penny?
Sorry but i think it is YOU that is in the wrong, people will have there own opinion.
-
When buying wheels (s/h) you should at least be told of all the problems on them. Not just a hand full of info on them. the main problem i didnt like was the tyres would never pass an mot due to the safety of the wall sections and the bodge repair on the wheel. (and which the wheels could be unsafe for all i know) which i should have been told about before you sent them. It is soooo noticable with alot of over spray... Wont make this mistake again tho.
Anyway like i said. I did say sorry about it, but i should have been told about everything, and if i'd had known they'd already been in a refurb i wouldnt have went near them.
and as said earlier and we discussed. Sorry again.
