sorry all,
i know this is well documented and i have read a lot of it,
i bought a mk3 gti early sept and just found out 2days ago it wont go over 5k, which is most likley the timing, but i picked up a reasonable vag-com and ran it on engine to see what if anything it threw up,
it did throw a code up which goes on 000515 and mentions camshaft position (hall) sensor intermittant
so does this confirm that timing is slightly out or is it something else, i left my laptop outside scanning modules so will double check the error code in a min, to get the wording exact,
sorry to ask but its booked in for mon morning and want to be prepared, so sorry again for asking a question already asked, but i cant fully get my head round it
cheers

1 Faults Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications - Intermittent
Readiness: N/A
is what it def says
thanks
-
Is either the hall sensor on the dizzy is working intermitently or the timing is incorrect.
The way to check the timing is to set the engine to tdc the remove the dizzy cap and your rotor arm should be as picture 3 in the below image.

hi thanks for that, ive seen ur solution before, its booked in, only 20quid to check the timing, so gonna print of what u posted and show em, obviously in the nicest possible way, dont wnat to come accross as trying to teach them to suck eggs, lol, shud be ok, i know them a bit..
cheers again
wanna get it sorted cos dunno if youve heard but there is a meet happening on fri in blackpool and fancy going, my mate fancies it with his e30 m3 so could be interesting, :) its on un-phased if ur interested

is it worth clearing it and driving round the block to see if it comes back? just wondering if it could of being there unnecessarly as the guy i got it off fitted the belt a while back earlier in the year, and maybe didnt notice it? or would that be dangerous?
quite complex engines for old cars, and apparently sticklers for precision! which is good..
cheers
-
The best way to go about this, if you check the timing and everything it all lined up as it should be then its your hall sensor. As the car not revving over 5k is timing related and if everything is where it should be the only thing left to affect the timing is the hall sensor.

hi again, little update
itook it this morn to be checked and they assure me its timed correctly, and ignition timing is ok,
so bit naffed off cos ws hoping for a quick fix, lol, and when i got in i used my cheapncheerfull vagcom lead an laptop and reset the code myself, started engine and it come on, so reset it again while running, hey presto no 5k liimit, so i drove round a bit then stopped car and engine and started, couldnt get laptop on cos it went flat but the limiter was back at 5k, so to me this kinda points to the hall sensor causing the problem, would you agree? also the dizzy cap isnt very good, its cracked round the rear fitting, so could also cause me trouble?
cheeers

hi again, saw ur other post about ur troubles, and was wondering, how did u get ur figure from 60odd down to 60? mine is at 61 and the second box is saying 61 also, :undecided:
sorry to be a pain, not that mechanically minded, wondered if i nudged it slightly one way and reset the ecu whether it would sort its self out.
i got a pic of the read outs but cant get them to tag, lol
cheers for ur hellp

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-S
Control Module Part Number: 037 906 025 H
Component and/or Version: SIMOS 4S ö
Software Coding: 1964
Work Shop Code:
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications - Intermittent
so this error is prob cos the sensor is reading 61 instead of 57-60 or 1 but more concerningly why is it reading 61 instead of 5-8 :embarassed: :undecided:
what a bu**er, any help much apreciated, sorry all for all the posts just wanted to get all the info accurate so u can see the fault exacty.
cheers
btw how easy is the hall sensor to change if i need to?
-
hall sensor is built into dizzy, if its outside spec try resetting dizzy to tdc+ clearing codes
-
hi, cheers for reply, i cant do it myself, ill have to get it booked in, which is annoying cos was there this morning, but i didnt know it was out of spec till after, just gets frustrating cos i dont know anyone round here that can do these sorts of things so i have to pay someone, which p1sses me off, but still, i need to get it right before oct16th ideally, cheers for your advice..

If its timed up correctly as you say, then the fault cleared and you can rev over 5k then it comes back again with a fault and wont go over 5k then your hall sensor or dizzy is borked !! To get the hall sensor off the dizzy is long winded and its much easier to just buy another dizzy !!
I got your PM and the specification values I posted won't throw an error like vagcom is showing on yours, mine were mm adjustments to bring into the specification values. Even before I adjusted it, it would still rev over 5k and throw no errors, something is causing it to go well out of spec to throw an error in Vagcom....
Dizzy is easy to fit, the hardest part is getting to old one off as 10 years of rust around the base etc etc..
The way I did it is as followed !!
1. Remove oil breather pipe near the cam belt cover.
2. Remove Cam belt cover.
3. Remove spark plugs (Makes it easier to turn the engine to TDC)
4. Turn engine until TDC is reached using mark on camshaft and head as your TDC mark.
5. Remove dizzy cap and your rotor arm should be pointing to the mark on the edge of the dizzy.
6. Draw a line on the dizzy base and engine block to mark the position yours was in.
7. Unplug Hall sensor and remove dizzy base clamp bolt and clamp.
8. Gently tap dizzy with a hammer to lossen it free from the rust (takes a while) then remove dizzy.
9. With the new Dizzy make a mark in the same position on its base like your old one and then slot new dizzy in so the markings you made on your engine block and on the new dizzy line up. As your lowering it into position with your markings in line turn the rotor arm slightly to the right or its correct position so as it then is inserted it will then go into the correct position.
10. Once dizzy is in secure base clap with bolt and then put everything back in the reverse order.
The point I was making about mine being out of spec was I ran vagcom once the new one was on and 2 of the hall sensor measuring block values were slightly out so I undone the clamp and adjusted 1mm counter clockwise and it was then on the limit of the 2 specs so I adjusted it another 1mm and then it was bang within the middle of the 2 measuring block values see below.
Before slight adjustment
1 Co-ordination ( Specification 57 - 60 or 1.0 ) Mine reads 2.0 << Slightly Out
2 Co-ordination2 ( Specification 5 - 8 ) Mine reads 9.0 << Slightly Out
3 Altitude Correction ( Specification 0.85 - 1.15 ) Mine reads 1.12
4 Operating Conditions ( Specification 00000000 ) Mine reads 00000000
After adjustment
1 Co-ordination ( Specification 57 - 60 or 1.0 ) Mine reads 60
2 Co-ordination2 ( Specification 5 - 8 ) Mine reads 7
3 Altitude Correction ( Specification 0.85 - 1.15 ) Mine reads 1.12
4 Operating Conditions ( Specification 00000000 ) Mine reads 00000000
If you were local I'd could guide you on how to do it if your not that confident...
