Title: KR16V how to go faster?
Post by: kraM on 01 October 2009, 21:57
Hi
Due to a technical error , (ran out of tarmac and hit a tree...)

My MK2 KR16V 1989, big inlet manifold engine is off to live in my MK1, The conversion won't be an issue...

Until now, then engine and rest of the car have been totally standard.

Any hints 'n' tips, Do's & Don'ts when it comes to tuning the KR lump, please?  (I am keeping the injection system)

Thank you

kraM

What's your budget? 4 branch manifold and a "Man in the shed" head should see you right.

The WUR mod will see a few extra horses too.

There's always a 2.0 bottom end though. Just mentioning it in case you're not aware

Hi

Thank you for your answers, just one point... WUR? dunno what it means!

I plan to bore the bottom end to 2L when funds allow, lighten and ballance, but I'd heard that the heads and injection system were pretty much as good as you can get, with no scope for porting/valve size increase etc?

I have managed to get a healthly gain from my O.E. 1600 8V GTi (Mk1) but using it as a day to day car doesn't do either of us any favours, it is a tad highly strung.

Just don't know the traits of the KR lump.

Cheers

No need to bore out the 1.8 as you can use a 2.0 bottom end from other VAG 16v's. In fact you might as well just chuck in a 2.0 ABF lump from a MKIII. It will run on the K-jet set up fairly easily. That'll give you approx 160bhp out of the box. Add a flowed head and decent zorst and you can get that up to around 180bhp. Engines can be picked up for approx £200 and I think the man in the shed heads are ball park £500.

Hope that helps a bit. Try using the search function and search for 2.0 16v conversion for more info or have a look at Veedubgti16v's Dub Rides thread title 85gti. It's a very common engine swap with at least 5 people having done it on here in the last 12 months. However I'm not sure about how easy the 2.0 bottom end physically fits in a MKI as I believe the bay is a little shallower than the a MKII.

umm the kr injection system im running in my mk1 is running luuuuuuurerly thank you very much
and bored out to 1.9 and with fast road cams and pnp head is super entertaining

its good to give a alot more powerful motors a run for their money,

dont underestimate properly set up mechanical fuel injection

after all most group b audi quattros ran it

sorry bit pissed and didnt read properly  :undecided:

but wur means warm up regulator and providing the mod to it is done right it will give  better fuelling on the top end therefore more power? the techys will give more info
sorry on 8th can

As said, buy an ABF and lighten/balance that. Set up properly on the K-jet setup itll give you a damn sight more power for much less money/hassle than boring out a KR, money you could spend on some reasonable cams to suit a ported head perhaps?

Nice one, cheers lads,
LMAO at raferackstraw... dude, awesome comments.  (sorry, window regulator knackered)

Was thinking of staying low compression, then bolting a supercharger onto it, when funds allow...

But skint at the moment.  :(

200bhp in a MK1 is about as much as they can handle, without doing a Astra GTE16v (going all bendy at full moo)

Cheers

the ABF's sit to high in the mk1 bay and would give you problems when it comes to the exhaust, your best off using a the 2.0 9a bottom end out of passats and corrados with the kr system, same power just less of a pain to fit when it comes to the exhaust manifold

Exhaust manifold... do you think I'll get an MOT if I just turn the exhaust left and have a wing exit?  Too loud?

Sorry

Need to start doing it, rather than thinking about it...

Cheers for all the above

KR16V how to go faster?

more right pedal, less middle pedal

Or go all out and fit a jesus pedal...

A Jesus pedal you ask? Well it's a tried and tested system that will ensure your lap times come down dramatically, it's also cheap....

Basically you attach a piece of 2x4 to the bulkhead left of the clutch pedal and when you come to a corner where you would normally brake, press the block of wood instead.
Go "Jesus", as you career round corners at speeds you previously thought impossible.
This modification also works well with reinforced Jesus handles and scotchgaurded gussets....
