I dont think you need to change oil after 1k km... You can see when you need to do your next service using your MFD...

I thought it should be done after 1000 miles to get rid of all the metal fragments from the running in period ???

I'm not sure whether they still do this - the MFD will tell you if they do.

Like running in, many people will tell you you don't need to do this with modern engines.

If you're going to keep the car for 100,000 miles then it would be a good idea IMO. If you are going to trade it in after a few years, it'll almost certainly make no difference to you.

Personally, I'd do it anyway at around the 1500 mile mark - a few litres of oil and a filter isn't a huge cost after all. But don't 'flush' the engine - just drain it. Flushing can do more harm than good.

No oil change needed at 1000 miles

Well, I have not read anywhere it was needed.
For sure if VW could snatch some extra bucks, they would certainly have mentioned it the manual !

Im with you on this one. Im no mechanic but the "running in" period must have an adverse effect on the oil. Its a cheap fix to change it and the filter just for the peace of mind. Changing the oil cant cause any harm or can it??

Back in the day of the Mk2 Golf VW used to use a higher capacity oil filter out of the factory to prevent possible build up of metallic wear debris and other contaminants reducing flow. I believe synthetic oils, modern filter design and closer control of manufacturing tolerances mean this is not entirely necessary. I'm old-school when it comes to this sort of thing so I'd rather spend £40 on some oil and a filter and do an early change at 1500 miles.
