Was in at my dealer today to sign the finance as my Golf was arriving either tonight or tomorrow night
Anyway got talking to him about delivery dates etc and he said they had lost a few customers who actually cancelled orders or not bought golfs due to the delivery time. VW were now looking to move some of its production of the golf to the factory in America that produces the Fox as the Americans are their number one buyer at present. This would free up the Germany plant to catch up with the European orders.
He also said he ordered a GTi for a customer yesterday and was told by VW to advise that he would be looking at a February delivery date.
Traditionally VW shut all their plants after week 48 for Christmas so if your car has a build week of week 49 (first week in December) It actually isn't built until they resume in January!! But this year they are toying with staying open like they did in the summer to try and meet demand.
He also said because of the long delivery times, VW were also thinking of taking the VAT hit if the car was ordered before the VAT was increased in January but this hasn't been confirmed yet.
Not sure how much of this is true!!

Wow. Makes me grateful for my 9-10 week wait!
Rolfe.

Interesting inside info there, thanks for sharing

Cheers for this, it sounds pretty plausible stuff....if VW did take the VAT hit, that would certainly make me a tad better about this wait
Oh, and enjoy the car u lucky etc etc

Well my order is Week 49 and the dealer confirms i Will have the car before Xmas. Since Wk 48 is the last week in November i doubt very much they close the factory for 4-5 weeks for Xmas.
As to lead times, my dealer also said VW UK were being given extra prioirity over German dealers since the German scrappage scheme has ended and the UK one extended. This might help some orders being placed now. A lot depends on your delaer - Chester got me wk 49, South Hereford arages couldn't get a build date til February.
And i thought 3 doors were built in Mexico, and 5 doors in Spain - perhaps the GTi is different ??

Golfs are built in Wolfsburg, Germany. At the time of my visit in August they were building 2000 Golfs a week, some LHD, some RHD. All Golf models, both 3 & 5 door. They were on a 24hr , 5 day shift system at the time.

Yup, I can confirm what Golfti says... I was there too... You can have a great buffet breakfast for only Euro18.00... Golfs are made in Wolfsburg...
-
Your all talking nonsense, I saw a car being made on 'How Its Made' on discovery channel and it was finished in almost 10 mins.

Yeah I got told something similar myself a month or so back when lookin at ordering the Scirocco GT which is why I jumped ship & got a Golf. No lookin back now!
-
Sciroccos are made in Portugal. Golfs come from Germany. And some cheap models (Polo, Fox) are made in Brazil, Mexico and soon India. But on the other hand Å koda Octavia (1Z), VW Touareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne are all made in Slovakia.

Cheers for the possible heads up! I wonder If the quality would deteriorate if built in america??

It did for BMW. And if I recall, the Westmorland VW plant quite often had quality issues back in the day.

Signed the order form about 2.5 weeks ago, but it was a car the dealer already had on the system that we just modded the spec a bit. The spec was locked in for build last week according to VW CS
Thanks for the confirmation on the build locations too - i didn't think the called it Golfsburg for nothing !!
