Title: Boost Leak - CONFIRMED RED TURBO PIPE GONE - NOW FIXED
Post by: Rhyso on 30 September 2009, 18:51
coming home tonight put my foot down at approx 70mph in 6th

no black smoke as usual but instead a hissing sound much like a boost leak

the hissing sound starts at 2500rpm and ends at approx 2800rpm - car 'feels' like its slightly down on power

No fault codes  though I have had a plume or two or white smoke - however sat at idle and revving the engine produces NO smoke but the noise is apparent

Got it booked in tomorrow morning but should I fear the worst  :undecided:  Oil and coolant levels seem ok

Loose intercooler pipe?

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/238516/1538283.aspx#1538283

checked all the pipes and they seem secure  :undecided:

its the lack of black smoke that worries me as every time i've had a boost leak it runs like sh!t and chucks miles of of it out the back

Hmm true bud

one of the posts says

"i had the problem of the noise, not the smoke or lag though, was a split in the pipe from the intercooler, took the front drivers side wheel off, and the inner plastic surround and its all easy to get to then, just a matter of undoing some nuts and its all free! "

Time for hybrid then,  Can we get in carried out before saturday?.. :smug:

The worst case is a is a crack in the turbo which is opening up under load and extream heat bleeding the boost off and leaking oil into the hotside.

How many times did it do it? and is it still doing it?  If it keeps doing it you need to try and get a sniff of the white smoke to find out if its oil. water or fuel bore wash.

Won't be going hybrid as i would need an uprated intercooler then

had a look and there wasn't any oil splattered over the turbo and when revving when stationary there's NO smoke at all  :undecided:

the noise appears without fail at 2500rpm and goes by 3000rpm

Had a look at all the pipes but couldn't see anything obvious - will check again in the morning for leaks.  I'm hoping its something simple such as a perished o-ring around the intercooler pipework

Thats what my car does, noise disappears after 3k and pulls harder :undecided:

is it a full on hissing noise like a boost leak would make?  :undecided:

right its deffo a boost leak - she was black smoking like a good one this morning

Took the technician for a quick spin and hopefully they'll find out where its coming from - I couldn't see anything obvious but I've got a feeling it might be my red turbo outlet pipe as when we were up at R-Tech it didn't look too clever then

Just awaiting a phone call.......

Post by: Rhyso on 01 October 2009, 15:07
Confirmed - it is the red turbo outlet pipe thats gone; apparently the garage have left me several messages.....

Anyhoo now for the best part....

£80 diagnostics - fair enough......
£100 + VAT for the pipe!!
£105 to fit the fooking thing!! Urm up on a ramp its a spring clip, two jubilee clips and its free

So I've ordered the pipe, pick that up in the morning and fit it myself

Now got to work out if I can afford to go to JKM this weekend

wonder whether it was the drive shaft rubbing on it which caused it to go :undecided: send the bill to forge for making a product not suitable for its purpose  :lipsrsealed:

not a bad idea that Steve :afro:

Well the woman didn't explain it all properly but the short story is its all being sorted for £200 - thats diagnostics, new pipe AND fitting

All being done first thing tomorrow morning

The DERV will be at JKM

£150 pipe, better than new turbo time :smug:

It's always nice when you imagine the worst, and it's something a lot smaller [and cheaper!!!]

Can't remember exact figures but an experiment was once done regarding a Ford Mondeo. To buy new the car was about £18.5k, to build in parts from dealer I'm sure it was around £175K

fecking crazy

I was going to fit the pipe myself but I thought by the time i drag my tools out, get under the car and sort it out it could be done and I'll be on my way to Portsmouth

Plus I get labour and warranty on the pip and the fitting - not ideal but as you said CONSIDERABLY cheaper than a new turbo......
