ive taken my 5 stug mk 3 gti alloys off with 205 50 15s on and put some audi a 3 wheels with 205 55 16s on but now they rub on the rear struts when cornering , the fronts are fine , and it rolls fine its just when the tyre leans on the rear it catches , what are the correct spacers for this , also im on a budget has anyone got any?????
-
wrong tyre size you need a 45 prfile not 55
-
yeah wrong tryes.......go for 195/45x16 for extra clearance! (or 205's if you really want but you may still need a spacer if lowered)
-
yes i know there the wrong size but ive just bought them 2nd hand and the tyres are like new , so im not buying new uns , im lowering the car next week 30mm , so ill need spacers on the rear , whats the best ones to get for a mk3 , or has anyone got 2

Hi Mate I would try 5 mm spacers as I think 10mm would push them onto the arches. I had a similar problem with mine when I bought them. Like yours I am reluctant to buy all new tyres when the wheels have three virtually brand new tyres on. I altered my spring plate with the help of an angle grinder and solved my problem!!!!!!! Have a look at this on E.Bay -350258031202 Hope this helps

just remember your speedo will be about 7-8% out (and that's an under read!! at 75 you'll actually be doing 81....)
don't be getting points due to the wrong tryes!!

Too right the wheel calculator is brilliant and it is right. I was driving down the lanes last night and coming into the villages the sign was flashing slow down to 40 and my speedo was reading 40. Mine is approx 8 to 10 percent out. Deano

Going to be easier in the long run to change the tyres.
-
would it be safe to shave a bit off my spring plates , i mean just enough to stop em rubbing :embarassed:
-
It would obviously not be recommended mate but I did mine last week and used the angle grinder to shave off about 5mm to clear the tyres. There is about an inch clearance between the edge of the plate and the spring. I tested mine on a yard full of pot holes before going on the road and have had no problems yet whatsoever (touchwood). Just make sure that there is plenty of rim left to hold the spring but because of the tension in the spring if the spring is over by the rim you have a problem anyway!!!!!!! Mine is great now and even with me, the missus and the two kids in the back I get no rubbing at all.
It's your decision and I cannot condone doing this but I could not wait until I got spacers but as I said before spacers would have pushed my tyres onto the arches. Let me know what you decide (out of curiosity) but remember the plates (and rim) are there for a reason.
Hope this helps Deano

Ebay or Venom, they will catch the rear arch however with tyres that big.
-
I will say this once only....but if you only need 3 or 5mm some universal's will do the job good enough (although I wouldn't use them myself!!)
halfrauds etc sell them

would i need longer wheel bolts with a 5 mm spacer?? :smug:

I'm also interested in an answer for this

No standard bolts should be fine for 3mm or 5mm spacer.
-
You may get severe vibration problems with universal spacers if you dont fit them true!
Best if you get the single drilled ones to suit.
-
got some ripspeed halfords ones today for £9.99 and if they no good they do a 9.6mm one for £14.99
the guy there says 5mm dont need to have new bolts , he says 5 turns of the nut will be secure enough , happy days man :nerd:

the real answer you should have been given is, fit new bloody tyres instead of compromising handling/ speedo reading or if you cant afford it then put the old wheels back on until you can!

+1 I did say the same in a earlier post.

old wheels have got real dodgy tyres on.

That may be the case, but the 16"s have the wrong size tyres
-
fair enough on gettin the correct tyre size. but for a tenner for some spacers, and the tyres that are on the a3 rims are mint.
Why would he want to spend the money on getting 4 new tyres, when for a tenner he can have nearly new tyres and will last a long time. Giving him time to save up for some good correct size tyres at a later date.
I'd do what your doing myself mate. Why waste money now, when you dont have to.
No offense to any of you guys, as i know your only trying to help.

Maybe yes but fitting spacers may or will cure one problem but then your going to run into arch clearance issues as and when you lower it.
-
I see your point.
Alot of money for 4 new tyres tho
All depends on when he wants it lowered aswell.... You better think what you want my friend lol.
-
I'd be more worried about the speedo reading 8-10% out!! 4 tryes are cheaper than points!!
-
Thats obviously going to be his issue aswell.

i like to live in danger

Enjoy the rubbage
