Title: GTI Gearbox oil change
Post by: darren_kobe on 30 September 2009, 12:35
Hi guys, just bought an 'E' reg GTI 8v. Its in pretty good condition but the box doesnt feel as smooth as I think it should. Gunna change the gearbox oil asap.

Any tips on fluid type?

Havent had a detailed look under her yet but if anyone has some useful tips or pics that would be great.

Thanks

SAE80 - RedLine MTL is usually recommended.

Your car will be '87? Your on a boundary on what gearbox (if even original) it will have. With the car level, the earlier models need filling until the filler hole overflows, then a further 0.5L adding (usually via the speedo cable hole).

Later models had the filler hole moved up about 7mm to correct this.

2L is what you should be putting in regardless of box vers.

Ok, Ill take a look. Thanks Dan

no probs, like said is fairly simple to do, ive found it easier to get a 17mm hex attachment for a ratchet as its easier than the huge allen keys you can get lol cant get much leverage on them. also wear gloves when draining the oil, its grim stuff stinks like no other!

Just make sure you can undo the filler before you undo the drain!
