Title: Re-mapping a AGN??
Post by: tariqb on 28 September 2009, 20:05
I have a 1999 AGN and want it to be a little more spicy - can this be done? and if so what sort of performance am i looking at?
i know R-Tech have a reputation and I wouldn't look anywhere else! -

+8-10 bhp with a bit more mid-range punch & sharper response.

Is that all? - I was expecting at least 30 BHP more! -

Gave that up years ago!!
The car has lost some power since new - it had 125 BHP but probably has only 100 left - will the remap add 10 bhp to the 100 or will it be 135bhp?
I think i need Nick here for clarification -

go to R-Tech and stick it on the rollers   they'll run it in stock, then load the map, then run it again

But will it only get 8-10 bhp?

pretty much - no turbo = very little gains

you'll get sharper throttle and perhaps a better torque band but thats about it

not really big gains with n/a engines!

I knew it wouldnt be as much as a turbo but was expecting a few more than 10 bhp - Is that the definitive answer or does Nick know something else?

They were right about the long term damage, then!  :P  :D

No, the map won't cure any other problems you've got with the car!  :D

As she had a good service recently - Changed the plugs etc.?  Any fault codes?

It did have an air intake code a while ago - so I changed the lamda sensor and changed the MAF to an original VW part- the service was done 1k ago as well - the car was drinking petrol but all that is sorted - got the brake discs, pads changed as well. The car as far as i know has no problems at all and goes through all gears nicely right up to 6000 revs.

They were right about the long term damage- sorry what did I say??

With this engine we cannot even say you going to make any peak more power at all. The remap will tidy up the running and make the engine feel sharper and crisper across the whole rev range.

It all depends what the starting block is.

OK - What will it cost me?  -And is it worth doing it?

1.8 20v / 2.0 NA R-Tech Spec1 = £150

Its worth doing at that price

Better off get rid of the car and buying a turbo  I had the mk4 golf gti 1.8 20v na and i tried everything to give it more power but it was useless, it was sooo gutless

Well the Octavia you have is the AGN engine but with a turbo - the other engines AUM, i think are 150 bhp with a turbo - so the AGN can be that bad a lump!
It is pretty quick, especially after 3000 revs, i too have a powerflow exhaust which makes a bit of difference & a new panel filter along with a remap will only make it faster - poss 140 horses. I haven't driven a turbo yet - i can definitely see the appeal though after r-tech get their hands on it.

wow, mine was gutless right upto redline. mine did have 120,000 miles on the clock though. But my vrs has 130,000 miles on and drives like new

Do what I done with my old A3 with the AGN, don't change the cambelt and let it wrenk the engine. Then put a BAM engine in and change ecu etc and hey presto, your out of pocket. Even more simple fix, buy a 1.8T as they are cheap enough now.

Mine has also done high mileage - 124k - honestly the car is quick after 3000 rpm - its sluggish in the lower rev range - i know you had yours on ebay - i was intertested at one point, so did you get what you were after, £1800-2k?  -i still love the car and managed to get my brother a little scared in it!
As soon as the revs go past 3k it does start behaving differently - it does shift  - maybe i got lucky but having a new maf and lambda sensor makes the difference.
I had a mechanic change the sump and front brakes. He had recently driven his mates mapped gti turbo giving 300+hp and said he was impressed when taking it out for a spin- obvoiusly its not the same torque etc but its still pretty good.

yes i sold it for the £2000 mark, when i say it was sooo slow i was comparing it to the car i owned before that which was a zr160 which is a pretty quick car. I tried all sorts on mine, i fitted new coil pack, maf meter, lamba sensor etc. There ok but at the end of the day if you really want more power then your better off buying a turbo model, it will be cheaper than spending stupid money on the NA. and they have alot more tuning potential.

i know its been a while since the last post, but will the map on this engine(AGN) improve the fuel economy. The MAF and lamda sensor which had improved the economy have lost their mojo and i am now getting 100 miles for every purple drinking voucher - same old same old - if the remap will help longterm then i'll book myself in to r-tech and get it done this week.

wont help that much mate, might see you an extra 2-3mpg. Honestly mate, your pissing in the wind, sell the slug and get a turbo engined model, petrol or diesel.

You obviously have another problem with the car so there's no point trying to hide it with a remap!
