Title: Flared arches with G60 trim!
Post by: g0ldf1sh on 20 September 2004, 08:53
Hi all,

I should hopefully be picking my car up today.? My wallet - ?500 lighter than before.?

Work carried out was:

Remove 90 Spec GTI trim.
Panel beat out the arches 1 inch on the rear.
Slightly modify the fronts for more clearance.
Tidy up bodge angle grind job previous owner made of the arches.
Weld up inner and outter arches.
Paint arches.
Sealant around watery areas.
Re-fit new G60 trim on all corners.
Paint Wing mirrors.

The Gentlemen i took the car too have done work for me before.? When i arrived to ask if they'd do it they were both sanding down (by hand) an E-Type Jaguar back to bare metal.? I asked about it and was told "Blank Cheque Job".? Gotta love the E Types!!

These Gentlemen are in later life - so are seasoned veterans of the old skool paint trade, when paint was 2Pac shiny and people took pride in the job they did.? They were trained by Bently and they really do an outstanding job on anything they do.? Which is why my car is there and whenever i need bodywork done it'll be going there.

I'm just dying to see my car.? I looked at the arch work already as they asked me to look and tell them if it was the right way to go.? It's not been easy getting clearance for 9 X 16 ET 15 rims i tell you,? even with the arches angle ground it still caught the tyres enough to shred the sidewalls to pieces.

Anyway, i'll have some pictures uploaded later on tonight or tomorrow morning.? I'll be putting my car in the Projects section too, next up is a 16V G60 conversion.? Might as well write a blank cheque too then eh! lol!

Cheers

G0ldy? ;D

Hehe, yeah mate i'm real glad you live close too, Die hard VW fans are very hard to come by down ere!

There are a few very nice MKII's about though.  I know of two in and around bridgend.  One has a 2.1 valver on 50's which tears up tarmac.  200 HP at the wheels lol.  Has to be one of the fastest cars i've been in up to now apart from a TVR, but still to go in yours yet! :P

Looking forward to our midweek or weekend meet mate!

 ;D

Your car looks very nice Goldy.

How much did it cost for the arches to get cut back?

The cars back in the Bodyshop at the moment Blue.  ???

Still catches just a little of the plastic on the rear arches so they are to cut a slither of plastic then rebond them as they were starting to come off.

It cost me ?613 all together, thats with the G60s from GPC.

The work they did is outstanding.  It should be for that price.  They do everything thoroughly, making sure the stuff is put back right and that the job they do is perfect.

The previous owner had angle ground the tops of the arches off for more clearance.  The thing is he made it worse by doing so, the metal was then sharp edged and was slicing and when i say slicing i mean "Slicing" into the sidewall of the tyre.  As a result no brand name no tyre size can be seen on the sidewall as its all been sliced/worn away.

The inner and outer arches were open where the clown had cut them, water problems to say the least, do i actually need rear wings? lol cause in time they'd have dissapeared with rust.

They panel beat the wings (all 4) out, instead of in.  No cutting of arches was required.  I'm sure they cut just a tad off though lol.

The welded up the inner and outer arches sealed them all up nicely, so no water gets between them, re primed them and then re-sprayed them.  Once this was done they then bonded the arches to the metalwork.

All thats left to do now is for me to get some decent coilovers so that i can lower the car more and stiffen the ride at the same time. :P
