Title: rcd510 and sd card
Post by: matchboy on 28 September 2009, 13:36
so reading about sound quality on the other threads and about the ipod being the worst, i thought i would try some tunes on the sd card.  took one from my camera and put a few tunes on it.  however, it came up sd card error and wouldn't load up.  anyone tried an sd card yet?  any ideas chaps/chapesses what's the problem?!

Did you try re-formatting the card? Is it over 2Gb? I think the 510 only takes up to 2Gb.

I would mate, your camera may have formatted it slightly differently for use in that. Or if windows formatted it, then maybe what you already have on the card is causing confusion when being read in the 510.

I'd format it clean and shuv some mp3's on, I bet it will work fine then.

Just clarify, I believe the 510 will take SD/MMC cards up to 2GB, and SDHC cards up to 32GB.

Is that true Alan, I stand corrected if thats the case, I thought it was 32gig for all formats.

Well if its a standard SD mate, it may not work if its higher than 2gig in size after what Alan has said.

Just to try anyway, yeah format it in your laptop, I assume your laptop has memory card reader slots in it ? If not, you have a usb memory card reader you can plug up to it ? I hope so, else your goosed.

To format, just right click on the drive letter windows assigns to it then format it. Just do a quick format.

I just downloaded a .pdf of the 510 manual to check. I spent most of yesterday wading through all the manuals in the handbook - really hard work. I need to get out more and do some driving

so kev i had one of those 16mb sd cards that you get free with a camera knocking about - thought i'd try that as its tiny, has no pics etc on it and also will nulify the whole limit of the card issue - formatted the card on my laptop then stuck just one song on the card - stuck it in the car and it came up......'sd card error'.  (unt.  now i'm getting worried its the unit that's faulty and its got nothing to do with the cards.  any further ideas?

Ohh, interesting. I wonder I wonder.

Erm, ok, I can only think of one other option.

Does the 510 have an option to format the card once its inserted ? i.e. Like in the menu somewhere where you can format it ? It 'may' be that the 510 requires to do the formatting before you then put your mp3's on it, but I very much doubt it.

Does the RCD510 not have to have a certain firmware version in order to play any cards above 2gb, or am I just making that up?!
I'm pretty sure its only the newest firmware thats been posted around recently that lets the unit take 32gb cards.
Before classing your unit as faulty, try a 1gb card or something lower and see if that works?

I have also tried an sdhc card 4gb in my rns510 and it came up with an sd card error.I agree with p3eps that it would appear that the latest firmware is needed.Tried a 2gb sd card and this worked perfectly but not with wma files when copying to HDD,used mp3 instead.

Does the 510 play video (mp4) from the SD slot ?
Maybe my mistake just looked and its called a windows media audio file, they are slightly larger than mp3 so i just assumed it was mp4 its a music file

Yes but it might take an eternity to "boot up" depending on what class it is.
I've read about folk saying it can take about 10 - 15 minutes before you can access it and that is every time the stereo is restarted.
I've just bought myself an 8Gb SDHC because of that but haven't got a reader to insert it in so can't even test that capacity for you

I use the USb with an 8gb stick, loads quick and sound no bad. One thing I did do though was up the quality of the MPS when I transfed them just in case....

You also need to ensure the SD card is formatted using FAT32. NTFS wont do...

Slightly off topic i know but do the colours change on the screen of the rcd510? i've seen some pics of mostly pale blue buttons and some of darker buttons with a reddish outline, not worth posting a new thread for what could be a one word answer!

would this only apply if the card is fully loaded ie to much data

Not sure to be honest but I would imagine logically yes, as it would be the data it was reading rather than the space available. But its purely a guess.
