Its annoying because it happens ONLY at a certain time!
That is coming off a motorway where you have those yellow painted humps/lines on the slip road and this happens when you get towards the end of those as you slow down.
At first I thought it was the bonnet stay. No!
Then the exhaust banging. No! (after fitting new mounts)
So I'm kinda stumped. Definitely sounds like something loose and banging against something.
Anybody else ever have this?
-
If it helps, on mine it was the top mounts.
-
Cant believe its them.
1. They are rubber and its definitely a metallic sound.
2. They should be fine as were renewed when I did the suspension.
-
It was the bearing on mine that was rattling and not the rubber.
-
I take it you are struggling to even locate the area of th noise as you have thought it was the bonnet or the exhaust so must be quite loud then. I get a slight noise over the those bumbs but it seems to coem fro mthe rear suspension.
-
Also worth checking you rear top mounts, if the rubber is soft then the shock will rattle.
-
could it be something like a loose heat shield??
-
got the same mate, my clips that hold the heatshield r coming away and makes the noise of an empty tin of beans rattling around underneath the car

New ones fitted with suspension! I dont do jobs by half!

Yep! Totally baffled, hence asking on here!
Sounds like engine bay and not from rear.

If you mean the big alloy heatshield over the exhaust manifold then doubtful as I ditched the second one after it broke in same place as the first and refitted the temporary one I made out of ally decking sheet!
But its worth checking again I guess!
-
just wondered as mine rattles at about 2k revs and it's really annoying. but wasn't sure if you had taken yours off or not..
-
Your always right, I know and respect that , however if it is rattling going over bumps that will not be a heatshield but something susp. related.
I know you said that the top mounts are new but I would recheck them and all other bushes as required.

Think you will find that your heatshield is broken then!
Mine eventually went around all 4 top bolt holes. The ally cracked and all that was holding it was the 2 botom bolts.
I bought a new heatshield from VW but within a month one of the bolt holes had cracked again!
So I reverted to the bent sheet of ally that I had made.
-
yes it is.. got some sheet ally here somewhere will make one

Actually heard this in another place now!
Where I'm working currently is a large estate and a long drive to the car park along rough and bumpy roads!
One particularly rough section, but not bumpy, it did it!
So its a combination of slow speed, no more than say 20mph and road surface.
Much as I hate to say it but Wayne is partly right!
Must be suspension related. But dont believe it to be strut mounts, maybe ARB mounts, because of the way it rattles.
So will have to get under again!
-
At least your getting somewhere with finding it, arb mounts is a good call.
-
Well thats still to be seen! I'm hoping that tyres will be done this week and I can ask them to get in on ramps so I can have a good look around!
-
Found it and fixed it! By chance!
Tues evening as I was putting car away I gave the end of the exhaust a touch with a foot to check it and heard a tinny rattling noise.
So decided to have a look at it later.
Jacked up rear and found it was the heatshiled above the back box. One of those silly circular clips had come loose and it was flapping one side.
Managed to fix that with a strong fixing and thought no more of it.
Yesterday morning the "test" area was blocked with traffic and I didnt hear it on the rough bit of road in work estate.
So this morning coming off on slip road it didnt do it!
Result!
So it wasnt suspension!
-
and it was a heatshield! (granted not the one i mentioned but a heatshield none the less!) hehe!
glad you got it sorted mate
-
I'm still a little baffled as to how I thought it was coming from the front of the car and it was actually way out back!
-
Thot so mate its a pain in the arse which i still need top get around to fixin
