Title: Alloy wheel offset question
Post by: JackJack on 27 September 2009, 22:04
Right...

After finding out one of my alloy wheels (An RS4 replica) has a crack in it, i've decided it would be safer to buy a new one rather then get it repaired after doing some internet research.

I've only owned the car about 3 weeks and the alloys were already on the car when I bought it so I dont know where they're from or anything.

I've found a single alloy on Ebay that I assume is the correct fit, 17" etc but I'm not sure what offset I'll need. The Ebay one has an offset of 35.

Would this fit correctly or is there a way of finding out what offset my current alloys are?

Sorry I'm a complete idiot when it comes to things like this

Thanks in advance, Jack

standard ofset is between 38 & 43 however 35 is fine although you may get rubbing depending how low your running

The size and offset should be stamped on your wheel somewhere.

I'll be surprised if yours are 7.5" wide. Think my mates RS4 replicas are only 7", So if you see a bit of writing saying something like '7j x 17' then you'll know the correct width of your wheels.

When looking for the offset, it should be the letters 'ET' followed by a number.

For example, if your wheels say '7.5j x 17 ET35' then the wheel you're looking at will be fine, otherwise you'll buy it and have an odd wheel :)

Plus, before I forget, where is the best place to buy single alloys? most places online come in sets of 4 and I dont really want to shell out on a new kit

Yeah just examine the wheel carefully mate and write down all the numbers you see on a piece of paper and then put them on here, I'm sure one of us can work it all out for you.

Best place for a spare wheel - probably ebay or a scrappy I'm afraid :(

Et35 will be ok and as a guess your reps will be the same offset.

Just had a quick look at the wheel itself and wasnt sure what to look for. Where exactly would any numbers or wording be? Or would it tell me on the tyre? I'll try and upload a picture in the next hour or so?

et is usually stamped on the inside of the spoke (along with size and commonly the manufacturer's details)
oh and be careful if your buying replica's as there not always identical (I looked at buying another rs8 wheel but on ebay and i saw a few that were slightly but to me noticeably different)

Ah on the wheel it says something rim "7.5j" would that be the width of the alloy?

try looking under the centre cap or around the edge of the rim on the inside. it MIGHT say "IS" instead of "ET" - i have seen a few german wheels with is - it means the same thing.

if you do buy a single replacement and it is a diffenent offset you can correct it with spacers.

if your other wheels are et35 and the replacement is et 38 the you would need a 3mm spacer for the new wheel. if yours are 38 and the replacement is 35 then you would need 3 3mm spacers for your existing wheels

hope that helps

Right I just took it up to the tyre and exhaust garage down the road to have a look as there was no writing or numbers on the front of the wheel at all.

The offset in the end was et32.

But great news... I now have TWO cracked alloys.

Argh so annoyed, I've now got to fork out for a new set of alloys
