just noticed that my n/s rear centre cap wont stay on properly cos the bearing dust cap is a bit battered. can I get away with hammering it flat a bit whilst the wheel is on or will this damage the bearings inside? should I take the wheel off and have a go at the dust cap separately?

Hammering it flat shouldn't cause any damage. Better to take the wheel off to allow more access to the cap and not damage your wheels.
My dad has removed his dust covers completely on his VR6 to be able to fit Audi TT wheels. It's been like it for quite some time and he hasn't had any problems :)

Water and dirt in the grease will fcuk them pretty quickly also as grease gets hot and runny it will run away from the bearing causing it to fail
I would modify it wtih a hammer to make it fit it just needs to be water tight and hold grease :smiley:

As the air space cools it will draw in moisture wheel/cap is not air or water tight.

The bearings won't last as long without the caps.

on further inspection, i think it was more a case of the dust cap not fitting properly. have secured it a bit better and that will have to do for now. the bearing prob needs replacing as its had an advisory for play and been adjusted already, so i'll add it to the 'to do' list! ta for the replies

Has anyone actually ever had the omix dust cap (http://www.thepartsbin.com/brands/omix/omix_dust_cap.html) get stuck there? I want to take the cap off so that I can pump some air in since the tyre pressure seems awefully low, but I haven't been able to get it off in 4 days. I did the air about a couple of months ago, so dunno why it ain't coming off. Anything from your vast experiences that can help me?
